Myth or fact?

Showroom Stock RX-7 racers use the stock alternator without the fan blades on the front because it provides a couple extra HP and/or sheds a little weight?

I've heard it, but it seems too fishy to be true.

It just so happens that all the alternators I have are the type without the fan on the front. I've seen very few of them with the blades on them.

It is partially true. The full story is that RX-7 racers can remove the fan blades from the alternator if they place in the top 4 of an officially sanctioned Stock RX-7 Race.

Also it is a Mississippi State Law that once you mark a line , you have to go by it.
