Mystery Spring
Mystery Spring
So I'be been having a heck of a time getting my latest project to pass deq. It's a 1980 GS with the TR of course, and it's so far off the charts that I've been going through everything piece by piece looking for anything odd. Keep in mind this car was sitting in a field for 16 years before I bought it. I was going through the ACV and I found this part behind the valve inside the intake manifold. This is a picture of it (should be around somewhere in the post). Nothing fell out while I was taking it apart. I thought it was odd that it was just a spring and no valve or anything. From what I can tell, this "thing" is involved specifically with the air going to the heat exchanger. I ended up cutting a circle out of some rubber sheet to act as a "valve" just as an experiment. Last night after I got everything put back together (the diaphragms inside the ACV assembly were ok), I went to start it up and it flooded. Not sure if this was my fault or somehow related to my fix. Today I cleared it out but it wont idle below 2000 rpm. I checked the throttle valve and it wasn't hung up on anything so... I turned both the air adjust and idle mixture screw all the way in and idle only went down a little. It's one of those SA carbs with air adjust, idle mixture, and throttle position screws. Any ideas why adding that valve would cause this? Is that supposed to be a valve at all or what? Just looking for some advice. I may have missed a vacuum line but I got rained out so I'll update tomorrow. As of now I'm just trying to figure out if that was supposed to be a valve or not. Thanks in advance.
So I fixed the idle problem. It turned out the hot start assist cable had gotten pulled out of place a little and was holding the throttle open. I'm still wondering about that valve/spring if anyone has some ideas. Also, to any SA guys out there, do you have any problems with passing smog?
