My weekend project.

So how would you guys go about cleaning a dirty engine bay. Steps?

What is the best type of cleaning solutions? For aluminum?

I don't have the time to pull the engine but i will be taking off the headers, intake mani, and cleaning the engine as it sits in the car as well as i can.

Any tips are appreciated. Thanks.

To cut off the crud I use Simple Green and a preasure washer. For the engine and coroded parts I use Steel Wool.

To prep my motor for paint I used brake fluid. It worked very well and wire brushes those things are great!

well when i cleaned the 20 year old grease off of my crossmember i used "easy off" oven cleaner. it works great just eats all the grease and grime away.

and to clean the motor i used simple green and a pressure hose.

to clean all the grim on the body inside the engine bay, take my word on this spray it with WD40 and and wipe off. You don't even have to scrub it that much. There will be the odd part where you have to put in a little extra elbow grease but thats about it. To do 1/2 the engine bay it took me about 20minutes. Make sure you have lots of towels on hand too.

Once everything is off, to take the wd-40 film off I would just go in there with a sponge and regular car wash cleaner, then rinse.

When I tried to use simple green on my car it would make all the grim even more gummy and harder to remove.

I like Castrol SuperClean. Comes in a gallon purple jug for like $12. You can dilute it in a spray bottle or spray it straight..

Cover your coils and your dizzy with plastic bags and spray everything. Let sit for 10 mins and use a pressure washer to rinse. DO NOT let spray stand on outside paint. Can cause major problems....
