is it my starter?

this morning i went out to start my car. it rotated really slowly, and made a grinding noise. it started up alright after a few seconds of that. i drove it to school. it was running fine. when i came out to start it and leave, it made more of the grinding noise. it turned over really slowly, and wouldnt start. i twisted the pully manually and it had compression, and it was rotating. i tried pusing the clutch in and starting it? then its attempt to turn over stoped and when i turned the key to the start position, it didnt do anything. the battery is fine. and just to make sure we hooked it up to jumper cables.

if its the starter, how hard is it to replace? how much could i get a used one for?

It's not that difficult to change out.. your going to have to get under the car though. before doing anything you might want to use some degreaser and spray the starter and around that area, you know clean it up a bit and you won't get to greasy. 2 bolts for the starter, 2 nuts for the contacts, and 1 small glug to the transmission.. and no,no used starters. your looking at around $100.00 dollors for an autolite starter+ core.

Don't forget to disconnect that battery before you do anything else.

Before you go through all that hassle, Check your ground strap to your motor. This will cause sluggish/no start situations too. While your at it clean the battery contacts and leads as well as the leads going to the starter. Basicly clean all end to end points for your wires and make sure they are corroded on the ends. Sometimes what looks like a good wire is really corroded inside so some replacement wires might be in order.
