my rx7 search. crap. dang. crap. pics

I found a GSL in pretty good condition for the not unreasonable price of 2500$can.

exactly what i've been looking for. but...

It's aircare(emmissions testing) certificate has expired, and i cant insure the car without having it re-tested. Testing costs only 25$can-- a drop in the bucket as far as insurance goes. the problem is, if it doesn't pass, who the hell knows what I might have to do in order to fix it up. It would be a huge risk to buy it.

what's more, the guy selling it seems really attatched ot the car, and only wants to sell it because its a bit of a gas guzzler. So I cant get him to budge on the price or get it aircared. he said it probably needed a tuneup, but since he already has it insured, he doent feel the need to go out and prep it for emmissions testing just now.

I'm so sick of not having a car. but I know the instant i break down and buy and econobox, the perfetc fb will come on the market, and i wont have any money.

this is the car: 84 gsl, perfect interior and decent body.

Looks halfway decent, what's the mileage, how does it look under the hood and how does the car drive? Those are some pretty crappy tires on there lol.

Why can't you pay the guy $25 to take the e-test, tell him you'll buy the car if it passes? If he actually is going to sell you the car, it's a small inconvenience. It's obviously an important consideration to how much you are willing to offer.

In my opinion, you need to slow down and be more patient - wait for the right car to come around. First gens are hardly rare cars - there's enough nice ones around that you can find one if you don't jump the gun. 3 weeks is not exactly a very long time - remember, good things come to those who wait. If I were you, I'd make it my goal to have a first gen by the springtime, say, May. If you approach your search with that attitude and don't rush, you'll end up a lot happier in the long run.

I like it, but its only a GS. Maybe you wanna hold out for a GSL with the disc rear and the LSD? I dunno, its up to you, but that definatly is a nice looking car. I also agree with SilverRocket. Either you take it to test the emissions, or have him take it to show you. If it passes and you want it etc, buy it. I wouldnt buy one unless I knew that it would, or had recently passed emissions (if I had to pass emissions ). If it doesnt pass, ask the emissions tech what it needs or whats wrong with it. Maybe the carb just needs tuned? Thats what I would do anyway. I wouldnt consider it if it wouldnt pass emissions and I needed it to where I lived (unless youre like me and can register it at your Dads house where the are no emissions ).

In this picture, there are no power window switches, and no balance/fader joystick in the center console. You can see the manual window cranks in the backgroud. Also, in the dash you can see the different stereo.

Then, in this picture, I could just tell it said "GS" on the back of it. The "GSL" badge looks the same, but its just a little longer cause of the "L" .

So there ya go. My massive skills of observation . Also, the wheels are the same for most non-SE cars from 84-85. Actually, come to think of it, those plus wheels are on more cars than Id like to think about, even with the various trim levels. So no, it wasnt the wheels. My cars an 83 GSL, and it has those .

how does it drive? Is the suspension and steering in good shape? If it is, sounds like a pretty decent deal. The car looks pretty clean inside and out. I only see the little bit of rust on the bumper. BUT, eventually you are going to want LSD, and disc brakes are nice to have as well. Those tires look like crap and you will definatly need something better. Dont cheap out when it comes to tires.

Well Thorin, GS or GSL, that car is in pretty good shape from the looks of it. The last RX-7 I saw in the paper here in Sask went for $2500. They're pretty popular out here, as I imagine they are in Vancouver, so the price sounds right. Definately get the car air-cared before your buy it. If worst comes to worst, you could always register it in Alberta to a PO box number.

I'm just glad that air-quality is not a concern of the Sask government, or my '79 would still be rotting beside a barn somewhere in rural Sask.

The horn button is crooked. That's a sure sign of rust...

But seriously, it looks to be in good shape and for the Canadian market the price is about on par with it's condition. Nice colour scheme too - the silver-over-black/grey looks great!

if it passes aircare, my advice would be to take it.

quick question on the badging on back.....

I have an 84 GSL. My GSL badge is on the right side of the car, not the left. And, I don't have "MAZDA" on there.

My car has obviously been repainted (same light blue color).

Is my GSL badge supposed to be on the left side? Am I supposed to have a MAZDA badge on the right?

Yea,

The GSL should be on the left and a Mazda badge on the right. That is how it was with my GSL-SE, but when it was repainted, the body shop switched them around. Since then, the Mazda badge has fallen off so now I am down to just the GSL-SE badge on the wrong side.

Actually, I have seen quite a few cars with the badges on the "wrong" side that I have no reason to believe they have been moved. Im not sure what it is, but some of them have it on the"wrong" side. I wonder if there was a stage where Mazda built them like that?

well, the car drives okay... it needs the usual, though, some steering work, some brake work, etc. the drivers mirror is cracked at the base, and the door has a huge rust bubble on it.

the real problem is that this guy doest seem to want to sell his car. so i cant get him to deal or anything.

if i could get him down a little bit, and at the very least, get him to aircare it, id' probably get it. but not if he wont do either.

damn. I like the color too. that and the brown color are my two favorites.

To much money for what it is. Keep looking or low-ball the guy. I live in Vancouver and got my 1985 GSL for $1700 with zero rust not even a spec in the storage bins. Since this picture it has seen alot of additions but it still looks somewhat similar...

Just wait for that perfect one, or talk to the guy like he dosent know what he is talking about.
