my new RX7 has a few problems!
Hi all,
Im new to the RX 7 and I have a few questions that a search didnt answer for me, that or I searched the wrong thing. Here is a bit about my car first. Its a 1984 with 80 000 km on the rebuilt engine.... the rats nest has been removed, and a K&N filter has been put in and it has a nice new paint job. those are the only mods that i know of.
The problems:
My tach only works when its really hot out, I checked the leading ignitor and its working.... I also found out that the trailing ignitor was not, so i fixed that! How do i go about taking the instrument cluster off? I tryed, but the haines manual is so vague about it, that and they make it seem so simple! Im just guessing that the problem with the tach is just a loose connection.
the doors on the car have been replaced with newer ones, and the guy who did it decided not to reconnect the electric mirrors! there are 2 groups of cords coming from the door, one group has 4 wires (im assuming this is group from the 4 button control) and the other has 2 wires. What do the 2 wires do, and where do i connect them to my car? im so confused! the good news is I found 4 cut wires on each side... so its not a hard fix for the group of 4 wires
And lastly, when Im in 3rd gear, i cant get it to go over 5000 RPM.... what could cause this?.... i havent been able to go fast enough to test 4th or 5th gear to redline, but 1st and 2nd go to redline with no problems. When I get to about 4700 rpm in 3rd, the engine just starts to resist, is their some sort of rev restrictor that i dont know about.
thanks for your help

your 'resistance' could be a clogged fuel filter. it'll let enough fuel through as long as you're not flooring it.. but when you do, about 5500 in 3rd gear is when it'll start puttering/bucking. for the tach, check your Trailing coil to make sure it isn't leaking/ has a good connection. and for the instrument panel, take a screwdriver and remove the black piece around the panel first, then take the screws out of the panel itself.. i usually tilt the left side into the dash and pull the right side out first, while d/c the plugs as i pull. As for the mirrors... no idea. good luck in fixing it up.
its odd.... at around 5000 rpm it doesnt sputter or buck or anthing like that.... it runs like normal... but its almoast like it lost all of its power, but i will definatly check the fuel filter. I hope its not the cat, I dont feel like replacing that! Besides, as soon as i get the piping for my turbo set up im taking it out... so i will wait on the cat
