my neutral safety switch caught fire

i was driving home from skoo when all of a sudden i see smoke coming from my dash. i start looking around and making sure all my **** works and it all does. so i keep going, and suddenly some **** starts dripping on my badass vans. i pull over, look under the dash, and there it is, the neutral safety switch on fire .
i advise on removing that piece of **** :smiley_12 , i caught it in time, but if u dont see it, it can engulf your whole car
btw: i have a 83 first gen

May I ask why you are "Undisputed"?? Did someone dispute the fact that your car was an FB?

Do yourself a favor, learn how to drive stick, and do a 5-speed swap. Your FB will become, that much faster....

a) both auto's and manula cars have a neutral safety switch after like 61
b) my car is a manual car, and the switch never worked e.g. i could start the car with out depressing the clutch
c) undisputed is my car club name.
and d) i will make a post with the word **** as ascii art so it takes up the whole post, and takes 10 minutes to load.

its funny how this thread is to ven, and "know it all" mother ******* have to try and talk ****.with the exception of one or 2
fucken relax, and if ur going to make stupid comment, expect comebacks, cuz thats another thing im good at

I dont think any of the Stick cars have a safety switch. I moved my car 5 feet this weekend with the starter.

Mine does not have one, because when my clutch screwed up and would not disengage, I had to use the starter to move the car enough to get it going and RPM shift it all the way home. I ended up burning up the starter that way too.

I was about to say... My '84 didn't have one. Of course I am far from the original owner as well, but I wouldn't imagine someone would just take that out for no real reason.

Most cars can be disconnected, My talon had one, but it was disconnected. I have never been in a first gen with one.

I know they can be disconnected, but what is the point, really? Its not like it is going to do anything beneficial. It is safer to have it connected anyway. Saves your starter just in case you forget to take it out of gear or something. Then again, they are pretty pointless as well. EIther way, it wouldn't be worth the time to disconnct or connect one up. I have never been in a first gen with it either though, but every other car I've been in has had one.

For Those That Dont Know

A SAFETY SWITCH USUALY STICK ON THE OFF POSITION, MEANING U CAN START THE CAR WITHOUT PRESSING THE CLUTCH. ALL CARS IN THE U.S. WERE REQUIRED TO HAVE THEM AFTER 61)
I BEEN A MECH FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS(INCLUDING ROTARIES) SO I KNOW.
AND IF U WANNA ASK, MY CAR IS FROM TEXAS, THATS HOW I MADE SURE.
ANY ******** CAN TALK ****, BUT GET UNDER UR DASH AND U WILL SEE IT. ITS ALMNOST LIKE A BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, ONLY ON THE CLUTCH

I've been under the dash of my 82 for hours at a time and I have not seen any kind of saftey switch there. Also, its not called a neutral safety switch. A neutral safety switch is only found on an automatic. A starter safety switch is what its called for a clutch. You would know that if you were actually a mechanic for 15 years.

There is no interlock on these cars. You can try to start with the car in gear and the clutch out and the starter will still try to crank (moves the whole car). There is a neutral switch, but it is on the tranny. Only for emissions related stuff. There is a brake switch and a clutch switch on these cars. These are there to cancel the cruise control if you should hit the brakes or the clutch while the CC is active. This clutch switch will not lock out the starter. If you check out the wiring diagrams, you will see how it all works.
