Question My GSL-SE symptoms....

Alright I'm kinda puzzled. I have a '84 SE and it feels like after half throttle its the same amount of throttle all the way down. Up until half throttle its fine even flow of power but after half it just feels like.....its starving for either air or fuel.

Some possible causes in lack of power is:
not enough fuel pressure
Fuel pressure regulator not working with engine vaccuum
TPS sensor isn't working correctly
clogged cat

The rebuilt engine has about 55K on it but a higher rmps if oil is a little low i get blue smoke. What do you guys think is going on????????

I would start with the fuel pump. When mine started to go out on the SE it would start to choke when you hit 4k rpms. It gradually got worse over a couple weeks until it just died. I don't think it is the tps, mine is acting up as we speak and it is when you are feathering the throttle that you get erratic performance. Bump!

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I'm having similar problems with my se. Mine only cuts out on rotor though. I will start it up, it runs on two rotors let it warm up a little take it past 4 grand one of them cuts out. It was doing this over the summer and after hours of searching it ended up being a broken spark plug wire. Now it's doing the same thing but the spark plug wires are ok. It's wierd because I went drifting and it ran just fine, on the way home one of them cut out. Scared me next day I started it ran fine until it warmed up. Anyone else ever had this problem. Help please.

Why do you say it is running on one rotor? Is it lacking fuel, spark or compression? I did have a similiar performance issue on the GSL in regards that it would start fine but then after it had time to really warm up the leading ignitor would cut out. At that point the car had about half its normal power. When the car cooled back down the ignitor would start working again.

Blazer - On this issue, I would first suspect the fuel filter located under the driver's side of the car, next to the fuel pump. This filter can become clogged quickly due to the high pressure and flow of the SE EFI system. A new filter ain't cheap at about $45 each, but it is cheap insurance if you don't know how long it's been since it was replaced. Running the car down to empty so that you're drawing up the last of the fuel is one way to clog up a fuel filter. All that sediment at the bottom gets sucked up into the fuel lines and runs through the filter before it gets to the pump. Make SURE you get the right EFI fuel filter for SE's; the carb filters won't hold the 44-52psi pressure and you'll have a serious fire hazard. Mazdatrix has this one at a decent price:

http://www.mazdatrix.com/getprice.as...m=13-4800-N304 ($37.67 - a good price)

Looks like this:

Smiley - The symptoms that you describe sound more like fuel flow related than spark. At one time I had my SE running on 1 rotor and found that by moving the wiring harness around behind the alternator (for fuel injector pigtails), I could cause the 'one-rotor' symptom on the fly. You might try moving the wiring harness around and see if yours does the same. If so, then new injector pigtails can be purchased from Autozone/PEP Boys from Borg-Warner for about $8 each (you need 2), and spliced into the stock wiring harness very easily. Since this fix, I have not had these symptoms again.

Both of you; post back with your experiences if it fixes it or not. I always hate giving out advice and then never knowing if it was any good. Take care,

Not sure if this will help, but I had a 280ZX that had similar symptoms. Turned out to be the position of the throttle position sensor. Adjusted it by trial and error and she ran fine. Good luck....

Thanks guys, Pt Ray your symtoms are exactly the same as mine so I will defintly check that out long duck I will also play around with the wiring harness to see if its the the pigtails. Have to get time to work on it though so it might be a few days before I can update. Thanks.
