You need to check the teeth on the flywheel and make sure that they are all good. The only other explanation is that the starter is a bad one. If it just spins then catches and there are no bad teeth and it is securely mounted with all the wires hooked up properly and a battery with good voltage. Then the bendix drive portion of the starter is defective.

it is very unlikely that the teeth on a flywheel will chip/or brake off..i have a 1st gen rx7 that does the same thing, what happens is that the motor on the starter doesnt push the rod all the way out to the flywheel...what you need to do is get the starter rebuilt/or buy a new one..end of problem....!!!!

And you are correct ont he starter eating away at the flywheel on rx7's, does not happen very often. But on other vehicles i have seen it chew away until a 3 inch section of teeth were ground down. This was caused by mis-alignment.

Do yourselves a favor and buy a quality part from a quality auto parts store like Napa or if you have a really good rebuilder locally. A independent rebuilder that specializes in starters and alternators. But stay away from Kragens or Autozone for electrical parts.
