AB My first Rx-7

I'm getting a 1984 (not sure which model, check my pics and tell me what you think it is) on Monday night and I was wondering if there were any glaring issues that should be taken care of before taking it out on the street. What I mean is any common problems that show up. Currently has 206,000 km on it.

First and foremost, bring some basic hand tools with you. Remove the storage bins behind the seats and check the inner fenders for rust. There is a high likelihood they are badly rusted. Unless you plan on doing bodywork you should walk away.

Remove the oil fill cap and check for rust or white clumpy fluid deposits. Improper crankcase ventilation leads to moisture buildup which causes rust on the fill pipe that can then drop into the oil and sucked up and pumped through the engine.

When you test drive it after warming it up take it right up to redline a few times and be sure it pulls strong. There are various reasons that it may not pull very well.

There's more but that's all I can think of.

Good luck

Good to see there's another member from the Edmonton area!

As orion84gsl mentioned, the first thing I would be checking is rust to the rear inner fenders. It's pretty severe in some of these older cars and it is in a structural point of the chassis.

There is virtually no rust anywhere visible on the body. When I went to look at it last week I checked it over fairly thoroughly. When I get it I will post some pictures from the inside of the fenders.

To Dan - do you do much racing with your Rx? If so, are you with the NASCC?

Have not done any racing as of this point. My car is sitting about 95% finished just waiting a couple last finishing touches to make it streetable.

Cool, if you have it done by next weekend you might want to bring it out to the Test n Tune, Sunday May 9th. http://nascc.ab.ca/?p=253 to register, etc.

13b or 12a? Makes a difference if you prefer FI or if you like messing with carbs.

Also, get a compression check or at least a "ghetto" compression check. A quick search of the forum should bring that up.

Check the coolant for oil, check the oil for coolant.

Start it cold and check the smoke (oil, coolant etc.). Let it run till warm up and then do a couple hard pulls and look for smoke.

HAHAHAHAHA! Dan done by next weekend? That's like asking if the icecaps will be fully melted by next weekend. Hasn't that 95% taken six years?

http://www.smf.org/standards/sa/sak2...005_final.html You also need a cage for the school. Check the NASCC website for required specs. If you are doing just the Sunday lapping then no need for a cage, but helmets are required.

lol, 4 years actually. But if everything falls into place, it's going to BC to get the exhaust welded and tuned next week. The wiring is all done on the car now, good things take time.

I gotta ask, why the hell do you need to transport your car that far to get that kind of work done? Are there so few decent performance shops in Edmonton?

As far as rotary shops, no. Getting a microtech tuned, even harder... Tig welders can be found but I am just going to get the exhaust done and the car tuned at the same time just to get it all finished (the car does NOT have insurance on it yet, needs to be appraised to do so, and the exhaust/tune needs to be done to do that).
