my first 1st gen

so I picked up an 83, cool car. I've owned several 2nd gens but this is my first 1st gen. I have lots of questions that you guys are hopefully kind enough to answer.

1. car stumble's badly upon acceleration, and sometimes stalls I have checked all the vacum lines, for holes etc. car runs great while choke is out. but when it warmsabd choke is off up it does this, also it feels like its missing when your gently applying throttle, if you push the accelerator it smoothes out. I have never owned a car with a carb so I'm somewhat clueless, shuttrer valve has been plugged car runs badly with it unplugged.

2. how much of a performance imrrovement would I get from removing the rats nest.

3. do any other cars run the same bolt pattern as a is gen, and what size wheeels do you guys prefer to run?

1. Not too sure, perhaps someone else can give you some help on that. I pulled the stock nikki carb off my car a while ago, so yeah...

2. Nothing really. Cleans up the engine bay and you get some weight reduction if you remove the rest of the emissions/air pump

3. RX-2/3/4, GLC, 626 if I recall correctly. The non-GSL-SEs have the 4x110 bolt pattern so you don't have a huge selection to choose from when it comes to wheels.

1:not sure on your stumbling problem, but in anycase I would probably rebuild the carb anyway just for good measure. The kits are around $ 25 and pretty straightforward.

2:None at all, In fact It will make the engine run too rich and load up under normal driving conditions. Not to mention killing your milage also. It really is too much cost for just having your engine looking a little cleaner.

3:I have heard there is a couple there of which I am not sure. I just got lucky talking to a guy whose brother had some wheels made for one that I picked up. But usually aftermarket wheels are expensive and few and far between.

oh dear...other people got to you before I could...oh well looks like they gave rocking advice...lol...

1)car stumbling could be a number of things...I'm trusting that you cleaned the carb before you just drove the car...if the car sat for some time I would guess that stumbling could be caused by water in the tank...when you get close to empty the engines sucking a really bad mixture of gas and water and that will cause you car to feel like its stumbling when accelerating...also could cause it to stall if theres more water content that gas...just enough to start the car but too much water to really take off...put alcohal in your tank and fill it up if you suspect water...carb rebuild wouldn't be a bad idea...try the simple things first as its often the answer...

2)in some states as I'm sure your well aware of have smog laws...and removing the rats nest might as in some cases but not all will make it hard to get your engine to preform at the level of emissions set in your state...other than aesthetics you will lose alittle lag...gain like a fraction of a hp...lose fuel milage and often runs rich...

3)wheel pattern...well I havn't come across another car yet that has the same bolt pattern...if you want a different bolt pattern you could go with a bolt adaptor which are pretty pricy running like $80 per wheel in some places...or you could do a suspension and rear end swap out of a gsl-se to get the different bolt pattern...search you will undoubtedly find whatever your looking for

Ck this out for your stumble I was missing on mine and it now runs perfect:

Anti-Afterburn Valve to Intake Manifold Hose (81-85 12A)

Many customers have spent many hundreds of dollars on wrong diagnosis/unnecessary repairs at other shops because of this hose. Due to it's close proximity to the exhaust manifold, the hose tends to get soft and split. It goes from the back of the carb down to a tube sticking out of the back side of the intake manifold.

you can see it best from under the car looking up to the rt rear of the engine bay (looking fwd) it is about a 1/2 " in dia. and 12 " long. It leaves a BIG vac leak if it's missing!!!
