Ok, sounds good to me.
Did you fail the h/c, co portion and if so what numbers do you have at idle and 2500rpm?
or did you fail the equipment requirement portion?

Ok, remember these motors ar ethe dirtiest running ther are. You need to make sure that
your tune-up components are in great shape, ie. plugs, cap, rotor, wires. air filter is clean.
Oil has been changed within the last 3-5k. Is the carb version or se? Need to make sure there are no vacuum leaks. Also take the car down to a good muffler shop and have him test the cat converter, outlet temp should be noticeably higher than the inlet temp. This
means the air pump system is working and the cat is doing its job obf incineration. If there
is no change in temp, it's time to replacea the converter.

actually i thinks its feul injected but its the old style that looks like a carb ,the engine is a 1.3 rotary fi,so im guessing the fi means fuel injected

Does it say egi on the intake plenum. and say gsle at the back of the car? If so its the fi motor. If so, after checking the cats and if they are working which i doubt and you put cats on, only need to replace the main one, if it does not pass. I also recommend running a strong fi cleaner thru the tank. If you can find bg's 44k which is sold at dealerships and repair garages, if you cant find it, run redlines cleaner. Check to make sure no exhaust is coming back thru the exhaust check valve from the pipe that runs to the cat, just undo it while it is running, there should be no air coming toward you. If there is the valve is bad and needs to be replaced. Now the last thing if all this has been checked and repaired if it stil l does not pass, probably the afm is out of adjustment and will need to find someone that will adjust it while he is doing the smog for you

Sorry, air flow meter, if your is injected there will be a round hose attached to the t/body that runs from t/body to the afm which is at hte front of the engine compartment near the coolant reservoir bottle. Whew, i'm running out of steam. If the air cleaner is at the center of the engine and it has a blue lid on it, it is a 12a carbureted version.

Exclamation

okay well if rx7doctor is pro, i have to do ca smog soon and i did a pretest and im a gross polluter and i have to do test only. i didn't get my sheet of the #s my car made but i know it was a GP. i have 1 cat on my car, with the 02 or whatever tube running into it, and my cats aren't clogged, so that eliminates 1 thing. my timing was stock, even tho those bastards probably messed up leading and trailing. my rat's nest is there. its a 12a carb, my smog pump is hooked up, but it smells terrible when i drive or even at idle. got any ideas/suggestions? also i put in new oil, filter, NGK plugs, and this time around i will use the guaranteed to pass ethanol method, but what is causing my little rotary engine to not pass? any help is appreciated. sorry for the essay.

smog

Well if the motor has been recently tuned up, last 15k or so and the wires have been checked and been replaced if bad. The most common is stiill the catalytic converter. Even thoug its not plugged does not mean its functioning anymore. Take
it to your local muffler shop and have them test for incoming and outgoing temps.
As stated before there should be a big difference between both, mainly hotter on
the outlet temp. Think of it as a mini furnace, its job is to burn off all the unburned
fuel in the exhaust (hc's). I have not had one that i did not put a new main cat that
did not pass. Good luck.

Pass w/o air pump?

Is is possible to pass the emissions w/o the rats nest and air pump? Mine was taken off and Texas just went to emissions in my county. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Edit: Forgot to add that I just put a new exhaust with a newer cat on it.
