My 83 RX

Hello all or anyone who can help me.

I have an 83 GSL 12a, I decided to put new coils, plugs and plug wires as all but maybe the plugs were original. Changed out the Diamond coils with Intermotor coils, did the new plugs and wires. Couldn't get it to start without some starting fluid and then had to run really high rpm's to keep the engine running. Tried to back engineer that problem so I put the old Diamond coils back in and it started but could not accelerate or the engine would die out. Took my foot off the gas and it idled away nice and smoothly. I'm no mechanic by any means but I thought the simple upgrades I did would be no harm no foul. Very hard to find anyone in the Fargo, North Dakota area who will even work. Any thoughts on my problem? One last detail, I put a Racing Beat after market Holly carb kit on it as nobody would touch the original carb to do a rebuild.

Intermotor coils are not an upgrade. The Diamond ones are factory and what should be ran unless going to a custom ignition.

You would need to back-track and examine everything you touched to ensure everything is in it's proper configuration.

My suggestion in the future is test all changes one at a tine and not to do multiple changes all at once. Take a lot of before pictures.

Thanks for the info. I did take great pains to do things slowly an replaced the plugs one at a time obviously but I did the same with the coil and plug wires. I decided to replace the coils as they're the originals and are 36 years old.

Diamond coils are superior even as old as they are to what you can quality wise in replacement coils today...

How about a back story on why you decided to "tune up" the car...was it hard to start,running poorly or were you just performing maintenance? If the latter is the case,is it possible you may have mixed up some ignition wires? Easy to check.

The most forward ignition coil is for trailing ignition,follow coil wire to distributor cap and it should be installed on the T coil terminal. The T is molded in the cap. Coil behind trailing coil is Leading,follow that to L terminal in distributor cap. If all this checks out,check plug wires next,
you will see L1 andL2 positions on distributor cap and they should go to respective positions on engine. The leading plugs are the two lowest plugs on side of engine,L1 is at front of engine and L2 behind. If you look closely at housings where plugs are installed,you will see an L cast into the housings.
Follow T1 and T2 plug wires from their marked position on distributor cap to engine where same as leading T1 is toward front of engine and T2 is behind. There is a T cast into housings by trailing plugs.

What plugs do you have installed,should be NGK BUREQ-14 plugs.
