I have done this in a ford. Never in an rx7. It is a heat issue. Coil will bubble like a battery if overcharged and swell. You must have not looked under the hood for some time, as it will take a long time for one to explode. I have done this on a few race applications on small block fords with very aggressive setup. Never ever on an rx7.

i seen it explode as well but it was due to incorrect wiring. it was grounded inproperly and it overheated and blew up.

MDS requires the coil to be mounted vertically.
If you have it in the fender insert horizontally the oil inside the coil will not cover what needed. the oil is used for heat dissipation amongst other things. this will lead to an overheated coil and in your case..boom.

Hope this info will help you in some way

just noticed your thumbnails and coils in correct position.

check for a short that would overheat the coil.

I replaced a horizontally mounted coil just the other day on a buddies boat that did the same thing.Popped the cap and spewed all the oil out from running too hot.......it also didnt help that he was running the full 12V into a points type ignition system,a ballast resistor took care of that.

I tend to use Diamond or Bosch coils for this reason. Even the occasional Hanshin.

No leaks for explosions here.

i know that msd reccomends not to, but ive ran my msd blaster coils mounted side ways (in the factory spot) for over a year now and never had any sort of heat/failure issues

I second that. I ran my MSD's in the stock location for several years with no problems.
