The early RX-7's had a manual choke for warm-up. In your case since you have an '84-'85 car the choke is automatic.
I'm not sure if it should take 8 minutes to warm up; I had a '90 (which also has automatic choke) and I don't remember if it took that long to return to idle. But that sounds normal; just let the oil pressure level off before putting it into gear, then drive it nice and easy until the choke kicks off and the engine reaches normal operation temperature.

Yeah, my 7 has this weird thing where if you put it in neutral when you just start it it will die. If you put it in gear with the clutch in, it will sit around 1k rpms until you rev it, then it goes to 2k and at which point i can put it in neutral. Any ideas why it dies when in neutral?

Me too ! Me too ! Me too !
I must have posted this or similar about ten times on here, but I, too, have a similar problem.
I have no choke ****, there's cruise control where this normally sits. Also there's no idle speed screw to turn to adjust the revs. Instead a plastic pipe goes into the hole where the idle speed screw usually sits, this splits to a 'T' connection the two pipes from which wander off somewhere else. One of these seems to go to one of those little space-ship things which is fixed to the side of the distributor. I'm not sure where the other goes.
Revs stay above 2000 at switch-on, they only drop to about 1200 when hot.
Just in case there's anyone out there with a magic wand.

Alright,
I fixed that problem on mine...
Seach for the "throttle body mod" on the second gen forum. I removed that coke system off my car cuz I feel that it can't be good to rev to 2,000 rpm on a cold motor.
Now when I start my car it idles at 900rpm as soon as you start it.
