Model Identification

Old [Sch|F]ool
VIN only tells you if it's a 12A or 13B.
There were three or four models of 12A depending on year - S, GS, GSL, LS, and LE. (LE only in '83, LS only in '80, GSL only '81-85)
LS had standard leather interior, and special (still 13") wheels. LE had 14" wheels and a targa band. I think they also had standard driving lights, too. (Denny was telling me something about getting the OE switch from an LE)
GSL had power windows and mirrors, disc rear brakes with a limited-slip diff, leather was optional, and P/S was an option from '84-up.
S and GS... there's not much difference, and frankly I couldn't tell you.
Given that it's possible to mix and match between models, it doesn't really matter what the car originally had, because it could all be changed. GSL rears are a common swap into lesser models. I've never heard of someone putting power windows and mirrors into an S or GS, but it is possible, the only trick is wiring it up.
- PJ ('85 GSL, has P/S, doesn't have leather. Perfect!)

It's probably a GS like mine. There are slight differences between the two models. There are several interior lights in the car, such as inside the storage bins and by the rear hatch that are not on the S model. The GS also has a light that comes on when you stick the key in the ignition. The radios were about the same - tape deck with analog tuning or digital with equalizer (at extra cost). Also, the later RX-7s had a 'GS' emblem on the back of the car opposite the 'Mazda' logo. The GS had power mirrors and a drivers side door 'lock-illuminator' that came on when you pulled on the drivers side handle.
