Question Mixture

How can I set my mixture on my carb to be correct for my street ported 12a engine? I know i can look at the plugs and tell if I am running rich or lean, but how can i set it to be correct without the trial and error of viewing the spark plugs? I know where the adjustment screw is on the carb but i dont know how to set it correctly. I know it has been tampered with in the past so it is no longer in the stock position.

Thanks for the help!

Attain the maximum idle speed you can just by turning the mixture screw, then turn the idle speed screw down to about 800, repeat as often as you can till you can no longer attain above 800 by turning the mixture screw.

Then turn the mixture screw richer till the idle is at 750... Slightly rich, but not too rich.
