Mind Train exhaust question

So I just purchased a mind train exhaust from '92 on ebay. It was sold as a complete system but is really meant to be use with the cats between the header and muffler in the middle of the system. I've already pulled the cats off of my '82 in favor of a temporary home fab'd straight pipe. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I should use as a perminent replacement for the cats.

Would a RB presilencer work? Or would that not fit/ruin the Mind Train note? Should a I just have a nicer straight pipe fab'd for me?

Any suggestions are greatly appeciated!

Wow that looks like one sweet system. Sorry I don't know anything about them so I can't help with your question. Do you mind telling us how much you had to pay for that thing? I just googled them and looked at a couple responses and people seem to say they are as good if not better than RB systems. Good find.

I don't get it. The system appears to be complete, so what is it you are missing?

Great snag by the way. I love the sound of the Mindtrain exhaust.

Thanks! I found it completely by accident, but there was no way I could let it go since you can't find them anymore. It ended up being around 500 shipped and came with original receipts and gaskets. It's even old enough to have the chrome tips but he never actually used it.

He told me that was the first time he bolted it together (in the picture) but if you actually try to hook it up to the car, it's too short and heads in the wrong direction. The muffler in the middle there seems to be meant to bold on behind the stock cat and when hooked up in that manner it fits fine. I just don't want anything more to do with the stock cat, especially not on this system.

Basically I don't know what to put in it's place that'll work with the MT setup since I know there's pretty much no hope of finding anymore MT pieces to complete the system.

Haha, well I'm definitely keeping it. That's pretty much what I've got now, I guess I'll maybe just get someplace around here to fab me something nicer than the home-made one I've got now..

I'll work on getting some good pictures of it though. Here's a nice shot of the tips from the auction.

Nice score.
I don't know much about that system, but from the looks of it, there is not much there to quiet things down. The cat would probably have done some of that.
Like the guys above said, get a pipe fabbed up, and if it's too loud you could replace it with some sort of presilencer or other straight through muffler.

Well, I have a Mind Train on my second gen, and I would strongly suggest trying to get a RB presilencer in there if you can. The Mind Train system is very good, but way too loud for my taste. And on the second gen, it has two or three (can't remember right off hand) of those "glass packs" on each side of the dual exhaust and it is still WAY too loud. One of my friends calls it "Mind Numbing" instead of "Mind Train".
I am going to have a local exhaust shop cut in a presilencer and see if I can get mine to a tolerable level.

To all the guys that are lusting over it, yes they are a nice system, but I would put the RB up against it any and every day.

To the owner: No offense on the previous statement. It's a very nice well built system with a good tone, if you can just get the decibels down a bit. Enjoy it.

I'm alright with it being a little loud. If it gets too bad, I'll look into a RB presilencer for it. That was my first thought, I just wasn't sure how that would match up with the rest of mind train setup. I don't really want to stifle the mind train sound, at least not for a little while. I'll give it a chance to rattle my teeth for a little while first.

Would you say this is a Mind Train? I removed it from an '83 last year. Anyone want it?

I'm running an RB header, then pipe to rear mounted straight thru stainless muffler ("Fart Cannon") on my car. Rather loud indeed, especially when I exceed 1/2 throttle.
That loud, gets old quickly. I have an RB presilencer that I bought with the header. It will be going under the car while I have up in the air for the GC coilover/Eibach Race Springs install.
I've been wanting to install the presilencer, but feared the car was way too low, and it would get tore up. The car is sitting ~1" - 1.5" off the bumpstops on ~20 year old ST springs. The mega-bumpstop action ride gets old quick, as well.

Cool! Yeah it sounded pretty good. Had some throat to it. It's for sale. I've given first dibs to someone but I'll create a for sale thread in the proper section if he's not interested.

i think there must be something wrong with the kits you all have because i can hear my stereo playing through one speaker at highway speeds, 2 like 3800 rpms. mine truely isnt THAT loud. albeit it is louder than the RB, i think it sounds better, its so throaty!

and jeff, if there is no rust on the chrome tips, shoot me a pm when the exhaust goes up for sale.

Yeah, Perfect_circle's car sounds great! A bit louder than my RB system, but strictly in a nice way. I'd trade in a heartbeat.

It looks to me like you are missing the same pipe that the RB system leaves out. This would be the pipe that goes between the cat and the over-the-axle-pipe. I found one for about 60 bucks, but you could probably have one fabbed at a muffler shop for 20 dollars or so. If you go the custom route, that would also allow you to add another pre-silencer like PC did if you wanted.

I'm pretty sure what I'm missing is the cat like piece shown in the system jeff20b posted. The muffler just goes off at too weird an angle off of the header when bolted together as shown in the auction picture to work. Jeff's is basically mine but complete it looks like.

Add a presilencer where the cat would normally go. The cat would help to reduce the sound, but also be a bit restrictive at higher RPM.
Option 2, buy a direct fit cat and install it. I know Walker offers a direct fit cat, and it is a higher than stock flow. Cat tech has advanced far, in the last 25 years. Plus, you'll be set if they suddenly add emmission testing, like many states are doing.
I have delayed the install of my presilencer to avoid damaging it, but I *may* go with a direct fit high flow cat, just in case they start emmission testing here, again.
