Mechanical secondaries... how?

I took a quick look at my carb today and couldn't figure out how some of you hooked up the secondaries via linkage to the primaries. I have done this before on a couple of hollies on mustangs and the end result was a dead spot as the throttle was mashed. My question is how did you guys hook it up and how does it not have a dead spot without having an accelerator pump on the secondaries? What side of the stock nikki carb did you hook up the linkage? FYI my car is a '85 12a 7.

Ok, I found the pics of the wire hookup. But, how does this not give you car a so called "dead spot" when you mash the throttle?
