Mazdave or anyone else (stereo ?)

I have a 84 GS and have an equalizer from a GSL I want to put in my GS. I think I will have some time tomorrow to give it a shot. Can you give me some instructions on how to do this so I wont blow any fuses? I know not to connect the two wires under the shifter cover.

I have the equal, the two amps, joy stick, and all the wires. I have taken the shifter cover off, but not the one that goes around the radio, does it just snap off also?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

are you planning on using the original wiring to use the oem components? if so, its all plug and play so to speak. if the wiring is cut, then i'll see what i have on the shelf as far as stereo harness go..

Yes, its all oem equal and wiring. Trying to keep it all original stuff. When you get a chance, could you post a 1,2,3 step instructions for me? I was looking at it and it looks like even if I take the plastic trim from around the radio/cassette, I still would not be able to get to the back of it????

I think Im going to try this tomorrow.

Thanks again.

pull the fan and temp. select **** off and unscrew the nuts under them.
and you have 2 screws on the bottem that the shifter cover hides.

i dont remember if the radio is held in with screws on the front but i think it has a bolt/ nut on the back to support it.

after removing the shift **** and boot (with panel attatched..you will have to be careful when pulling sharply on the boot not to seperate the boot from the panel), remove the stereo surround. you'll need to remove the two screws at the base of it under the shift boot and then remove the fan speed **** and the temp ****. there is a nut behind each **** that needs to be removed (i use needle nose pliers to remove the nuts). be careful not to lose the washer behind the nuts. the stereo is removed by four screws that secure it to the dash frame. remove the screws and slide the stereo straight out. the radio should be on top, followed by the tape deck and equalizer. i believe the size is a double din and a half...i could be wrong on this though but the oem high end stereo with ETR should be stacked properly and is plug and play. if you have any other questions please feel free to ask or shoot me a call on my cell.

Thanks Dave,

Do you think my GS has all the wiring currently in place with the amps that go under the storage bins? This would require on the install of the EQ.

it should have all necessary wiring. even the base S model had the option of the high end stereo. with that said the car will be prewired for the GSL and GSL-SE stereo. pull the bins and check and see if you have the amps already mounted back there. if not, you'll need the two amplifiers, the joystick balancer control in the center console (which will require a GSL or GSL-SE power window switch plate. you my be able to remove the power window switches and install your coin holders in the apropriate spot), and you need the GSL and up stereo. even the joystick wiring is there under your coin holder.

IM guessing the joy stick simply plugs into the wires under the coin holder. ON the back of the radio and eq, where does the eq plug in to get power? The only plug I see is the black one that seems to plug into itself????

I think I got it. I took the black plug from the cassette out of the radio and plugged it into the EQ. I took the one coming from the EQ and plugged it into the radio. All seemed to work fine. Was a little nervous bout hitting the ignition and not being sure after hearing the stories about people plugging in stuff down there and loosing all their dash lights.

Attached is the factory wiring diagram and a diagram of the rear of the tuner.

Not sure where I got this, but it is the best description I have found. It goes with the rear tuner diagram. Again I didn't write this, just stole it from another helpful owner, years ago.

--------------------------------
the 8 pin din connector that's listed on the diagram from the link I posted up at the top is the same across the board. The tuner connects to the 8 pin DIN on the tape deck, and the tape deck's 8 pin DIN connects to the EQ. The pinouts are the same.

For my rear amp, I took a 6 pin din, converted it to RCA's, and used the OEM speaker wires to connect to the speakers. It was quite simple, really. The 6 pin DIN supplies remote turn on (Batt + line), and signal. Since the tape deck is between the tuner and the EQ, i'm betting that the tape deck just takes over and cuts off the tuner (if you look at the DIN 8 pinout, it's got input and output lines, so the audio path goes like this:
tuner -> tape -> eq -> tape (passive on this end) -> tuner (volume) -> joystick thingy (fad / bal) -> amps)

side note to confuse you more:
The system w/ the joystick only uses the front output 6 pin DIN from the tuner. That goes into a little converter so it can plug into the 8 pin DIN harness that goes to the joystick. The joystick is what actually splits it into Front and Rear.

It seems kinda confusing, but if you think about it, this is the only way that you can keep the tuner's volume control working. This does mean you can daisy chain devices off and just have them interrupt the previous device's audio path and take over. Not that we're talking about an easy task, but it is do-able

great diagram!!! doesn't get any better than the FSM!

Rob, if you have any trouble or have further questions as to how everything hooks up, fire away with your questions. if not, post the results of the install and let us know how you like the new stereo.

Hey Dave,

I took the black plug from the cassette out of the radio and plugged it into the EQ. I took the one coming from the EQ and plugged it into the radio. Everything worked. As you said, all the wiring was there, including the amps under the storage bins so that made it easy. On the joy stick, all I had to do was cut the bottom out of my cover and it slid in perfectly. I also found the light for the ash tray had come out and was making a burnt mark on the carpet behind the cover so I got it back in place. Thanks again for your help.

Can I ask you another ? on this same thread???

My tach sometimes when at idle, will click on and off, it looks like the end of a fishing pole when you get a bite, jumping around. I hear a clicking sound under the dash when this happens. Would this be the relay? It does not do it when Im driving, seems only at idle. Any ideas?

Does your GEN warning light come on when this happens. Could be your Voltmeter kicking in?

Thanks for the input. No warning lights come on at all. Just a clicking sound, and the tach goes to 0, it will click again and it works, will constantly do this. When I press the gas and rev the engine though, it clicks on and does fine.

If I place in neutral going down the road it will do it, put in gear and press the gas, its fine.
