mallory hyfire

Hey guys. I was thinking of doing a little ignition upgrade. I have been considering the mallory hyfire 6a setup. It is about 100 - 120 $ and the coils aren't too expensive. It is a multi firing capacitve discharge sytem and it is digital, not analog. Does onyone run this setup??

I am wondering why it seems like most people go with MSD. WHat make the MSD 6a better than the mallory? The only difference in specs is the mallory is digital, while the MSD is analog.

$100 is a great price and it seems to do everything that the MSD does. Am I missing something? is reliablitiy an issue? is the cool looking MSD red box just too hard to resist?

What do you guys and gals think??

You'll need a digital signal to drive it and 1st gens don't have that. They use inductors on the dizzy to get an analog signal that drives the ignitors. See the transistor trick thread for details on how to convert that signal to a 5 volt square wave. Maybe the MSD deal with this while the Mallory assumes you have digital signal to start with.

Oh reeeaally! Good Cause I just happen to have a transistor trick module that I was about to sell. You are saying I could hook the mallory input to the transistor trick output?? Wonderful. And genious. I think I just might do that . I'll keep you guys posted on the results!

Yes, using the TT to convert the signal should do the job. I am not sure what the Hyfire does if the pulse is too wide. I suppose if it does get hot, you could build/order the latest version of the TT. I forget, did you buy Kentetsu's old one? Maybe you could do a comparision between the TT w/ 2nd gen coil and the Hyfire. Let us know how it works.

Wow you're good. You guys even know which version of the TT I have and who I bought it from. I think I'm being watched.

Cool I think I will go ahead with the project. I'll keep you all updated.
