Making fuel gauge readout more accurate
Hello! It's been a few weeks driving my new (old ) 1982 RX7 GSL and I've noticed the fuel gauge and sometimes the oil gauge is a little bit wonky. They're both guilty of it, and the fuel gauge is a little more dramatic. It'll deviate about maybe an eighth, not by much but still enough to wonder when it starts getting low "how much is actually in the tank?"
Is there anything I can do to alleviate this? Same goes for the oil, it's a little more accurate, though.
Thank you!
1982 Mazda RX-7 GSL, 137k, completely stock.

Both will be affected by voltage fluctuations in your electrical system, as your voltage regulator kicks in and out it may affect the amount you are seeing. I have had troubles in the past caused by grounding issues. Also, I believe there is a voltage regulator in the cluster that regulates the power to the gauges, this could be a failure point.
Also the gas gauge fluctuates from fuel slosh in the tank.
I have cleaned and checked my fuel sending unit according to the FSM procedure in the past hoping to get it to be more accurate but have come to accept that it is as good as 35 year old technology will allow.

Hahahaha, I guess you're right. I'll see if it's dirty or needs to be readjusted.. in the meantime, I guess I'll take the 35 year old tech for how it is.

Simple fix items are to double check and clean the contacts going to your sending guages first and foremost. Some grease or grit can cause connectivity issues, and throw off accuracy usually just leading to intermittent readings entirely. Also grounds are important on these cars and if you show no record of changing the positive and negative battery cables, definitely do so, including the main engine grounds. I added an extra ground from the negative terminal to the alternator bracket for precisely this reason.
