LSD Rear Ready, Detailed DIY coming soon!

My LSD/Disk brake rear is ready to go in! I can't wait actually. I've got all the parts and the ebrake cables will hopefully be shipped on Monday. Which means.... more work for me and a VERY detailed DIY for you. I'll try to keep it as detailed and picture laden as possible similar to the front suspension DIY I put together earlier. Anyway, sorry to waste bandwidth, but I'm very excited and wanted to share.

LDS Rear
2 New Rear Rotors
SS Brake Lines for Mazdatrix (the fronts went in great!)
Hawk HP+ Pads
The Springs are Eibach 200# and may go in depending on ride height. (the 225 Hoosiers poke out a little now).

That will be a nice write up for sure! I did one in an SA back in '96, found out the hard way about brake line threads not being the same between models lol. Oh... and the wrong proportioning valves

Quick question. After looking at your pictures, I went and compared it to mine (which I bought from a forum member). I was wondering if this is how mine should look like or if I got one that has been messed with.

Both sides are bent like that on the top and bottom, instead of being straight. Is that okay?

That is pretty much a dust cover. You should be able to bend it back to the original position and things should be ok. Are the brak line brackets and mounting spots ok?

There is definitely something going on with those brackets. Looks like whatever bent the dust cover got the mounting brackets too... time to visit an autobody and get em straightened up.

Damnit, I didn't even notice that. I knew it was too good to be true to get it for the amount I paid for them. Any autoshop will be able to straighten them out or are you talking about an auto body shop?

I think the brackets are the least of your worry's at this stage !.
I'd be more concerned if the diff housing is true ( straight ).
Make a claim with the shipping company if it was shipped ?.

Strip the diff down to just the housing.
Use a couple of straight edges across the front of the diff and axle flange area ( machined surface to machined surface )
Measure up left to right, horizontally and vertically this will give you some indication of trueness.
Or sent it to a proper diff shop,
They will be able to put the housing in a jig and should show you the result - Eg: true , bent ( but fixable with flame heat ) , bent like a banana to far gone.

The time spend in measuring it yourself will save a lot of grey hair ,
Remembering that you want your car to steer from the front end and not the rear end ,axle/bearing failure will also be a concern later.

Cheers.

Sorry for the thread hijack legokcen. I'm really thinking about sending it back to the person i bought it from since he didn't tell me that it was in that condition and hopefully with my money back I can find a better rear end. Thanks everyone

You sure it wasn't from shipping? The way it's bent looks like it was dropped from high up and that's pretty much consistent with UPS. Anything over 50 lbs and they drop it all the way to its destination (from personal experience on multiple occassions). If you look at the way the brackets are bent, it wasn't from a car accident as the bolt holes would still be straight but its curved over which tells me the damage happened while it was off the car and was dropped at that angle. The dust shield is bent exactly the same way really points to the shipping company IMO.

Everything you ship UPS is insured automatically up to $100. Over that you have to pay.

Most thing you ship UPS / FedEx is handled by ex basketball players.
If it don't bounce or good for a three pointa then it's your bad luck !.
I only ship rubber products via these two, knowing that the item will spring back to original shape Ha!.

Anyway getting back to jarath diff ?.
What's the plan before it go in ? Coat of paint,Bearing, freshen up the LSD ?.

Ps- how are wacksa ?

Its not the brackets that I'm worried about which can be straighten with an oxy and a couple of panel beating dolly's ( it's the housing it's self! ).
I mean there is not point fixing the brackets, if the diff housing has been feed Viagra ( BENT ! ) for ever bending to the left or the right depending how you dress yourself HA HA !.
I would get some quotes from an diff place and explain to UPS that is not only what you see in the pictures but the whole housing is in question and needs to be repaired by an expert !.
I would play up on the fact that, if the bearing or axle should break due to the housing being faulty and me driving into a school crossing, etc, etc, who should be blamed for the components failing ? !.

" Think this is directed towards legokcen, he's doing the write-up ".

Yes , I stand corrected thanks bud !

I've tested the LSD torque and it's good. The rear end has about 40K on it so I'm planning on putting it in as is. I just got the rear ebrake cables yesterday so things are ready.

This is great timing. The rear diff went out at Road Atlanta this weekend, so I HAVE to put this on. I'll start this coming weekend...
