LSD and Non-LSD compatablity???

I am VERY sorry if this has been brought up->

BUT, are Ring and Pinion from a drum rear end interchangable with a LSD rear end? Again I am sorry if this has been brought up.

I have a LSD rear-end I would like to keep, but the Ring and pinion are bad. And after pulling the axles out, decided it doesn't look too hard to replace if I wanted to. Correct?

I think the years will be factor, but from what I have read in Racing Beat it seems like it is possible. How easy was it to get your axles out ? I am doing the same now with plans to rebuild the LSD. Metal shavings ( curls ) on the magnet.

they are interchangeable but it has to be in the same series as in S1-S2 and S3. if all you need is the ring and pinion, then finding a complete GSL 3rd member would be cheaper than what you would pay to change the ring/pinion.

Maybe I should clarify the objective- I have a complete LSD rear end for a '84-85 GSL with bad ring and pinion. I have access to a Non-LSD drum rear end '83. Can I simply swap the ring and pinion from it to the LSD rear end? Why would it matter if it was a different series? I am keeping the LSD unit obviously and using the axles from that one, not the '83's axles. I am aware of the difference between the driveshaft flanges and swapping those are no problem if I would need to.

Are the bolt pattern for connecting the ring to the LSD the same, and what about the pinion. I could simply remove ring and swap the ring onto the LSD. Aren't all of the FB 12a rear ends have the same gear ratio disc or drum? I would be replacing the ring and pinion as a "pair" obviously.

BTW, I should point out, I have already disassembled the LSD rear end. The axles are hard to get out without a really good slide-hammer or a rubber mallot and a block of wood, BUT do-able. IF I can, anyone can. I noticed its easier of you spray the outside edge of the axle bearings so they slide out easier.

As far as I know, they are all identical except for the axle's.

Wood block & mallet? I always use the little spare tire with the SA llug bots. Always come out after a few tugs.

All of the 12a rear ends have the same gear ratio but the GSL-SE ( 13b) has a different gear ratio. 12a gear ratio is 3.909 or 3.933 late 84. 13b ratio is 4.076

That would make sense to have the wheel on while pulling it off. I did not think of that. All that pounding can't be too good for the axles i suppose. LOL
