Doesn't racing beat sell rear end gears? (I'm not sure what ratios, but Im betting taller) I'm not sure how hard it is to swap a Ford 8.8" rear in, but that would alow you to have a better rear end gear more suitable for daily driving as well. Plus, there are a lot more variations for the ford rear than the Mazda.

you want a taller gear? 3.73 is lower revs than 3.90. 79-82 mazda 626 uses 3.63.

I think you've got it backwards. "More" gear usually means a higher ratio (aka "shorter")...larger numerically. Gearing multiplies torque, so torque deficient cars always want "more gear" to take better advantage of what little torque they have. That means your car would probably be happier with 4.1:1, 4.44:1 or 4.88:1 R&P; not 3.73:1! Muscle cars, which have WAAAAAAY more torque than they can put to the ground and limited revs to do it in, want the lower gears, like 3.73:1 or whatever. Turbo cars have to strike a balance because the turbos require load to work against, to creat boost. Generally, even a turbo rotary won't want more than about 4.3:1 R&P.

Yea, I'm a little confused on what your trying to obtain. I knew you got the Tall/Short gear thing backwards though. Are you trying to make the car quicker, or are you trying to get "more gear" as in more top end?

well, with the turbo setup, the gears are just WAAYYYY too short. especially for highway pulls. it's aggrivating. so yes, i truly want something around 3.73 or so.

DRIVEFAST7: would the 626 swap right out? im willing to give that a shot. i hate hitting full boost and imediately shifting. it's fun, but damnit. LOL

edit: okay, read the rest of the thread.

Why would you need more gear?? Stock gearing is RPM limited to about 160ish MPH, even higher with an FC transmission (T2, N/A, they both have stupid tall gears).

If you need more than that, you need to not do this crap on the streets, and with that kind of power, you might look into a different rearend altogether.

less RPM, which is why i want a lower gear ratio in the back. i need more MPH per RPM right now 3rd gear tops out around 75ish... i want to get out of 3rd and be around 90mph. like the TII's. you'll see why when i get my vid up here of me racing my friends bridgeported TII.

Are you sure your car has stock gears? When I was driving my car before the engine went, I did a few runs up through the gears. If I remember correctly, my car was at about 85-90mph when 3rd ran out. 2nd ran out just above 55mph I think. I could be wrong though.

you must have been taking it over 8,000 rpms... cause i shift around 7200 - 7500 and going in to fourth i'm only at 70 or so mph.

Directfreak: DAMN YOU i'm so jealous!!! hahahahah, i drive myfriends TII's and i coume out of 3rd over 100mph or so..... that's what i neeeeeeed! the car just pulls sooo fuggin hard in 3rd but it's just too short! i finish 4th gear and the guys i'm racing are just getting in to it. thankfully i'm usually quite a few bus lengths ahead

Look into a rear end or transmission swap if there aren't gears out there that will go directly in. I know neither of these are exactly "cheap" options though.

Nope, shifting at 7000 rpm. For some reason my car would hit a wall and not go much over 7200 rpm. Anyway, My speedo might have been inaccurate though. I live in canada, but that doesn't change anything. My speeds were 85km/h in 2nd, 135km/h in third. I managed to make it to 150km/h in 5th through use of less than 1/2 throttle. My fuel pump was going and it would stumble if I used more throttle than that for a long period of time. 85km/h=about 53mph, 120km/h is 75mph, so 135 would be about 84 mph, and I wasn't quite at redline yet. 150 km/h is about 93mph. If my fuel pump wouldn't have been bad, the car would definatly have gone to 200km/h or 124mph. I could still feel the car pulling at 140 even when I shifted to 5th and used 1/2 throttle.

well good game, doesnt matter how hard the car pulls. mine breaks the tires loose just from giving it gas in 2nd. but that doesnt change the fact that when i'm going in to 4th i'm not doing the 110 mph i'd like to be. i'm gonna look more in to this 626 rear end. thanks drivefast!

RX-7 tachs and speedometers are notoriously inaccurate.

The tach in my '85 reads high by almost 10% in the upper ranges. This, actually, is within acceptable limits.

I remember reading somewhere about Mazda B series 4WD pickup front R&P that will work in the RX-7 rear end. Not totally sure about that, but also something about Izuzu and Hyundai front diffs work too. Don't know if they are 3.73:1 or not.
