Unhappy Love the style, hate the power

I really love the style of my car and am not really into the 2nd gen look at all, I do however like the Turbo2 power output and turbo. The only thing missing though in the 1st gen is the power. There really isn't to much ways to bring up the power on first gens from what I read without dishing out a pretty hefty ammount of money. Now they are things I would love to do its just i dont have a lot of money after paying my bills.
I am just wondering how much money it would cost me for a turbo2 engine and trans and to also get it put in because I am not sure I could do that. If it is a lot of money well I don't even know. It is just annoying thinking my old shitty beater car a chevy beretta was putting out way more power than this thing

how well did it hold up to that much nitrous?

was it a fresh motor?

upgraded the fuel sytem I take it? or did you set up a proprietory one?

Carbed?

all stock minus the exhaust?

run it at the track?

where the hell am I going to hide a system and a nitrous tank!? Damnit!!

Should I ask more questions? lol sorry just trying to learn a little bit

Hell, you can pull 150 non-ported, 200+ large ported, and 300+ ported w/turbo. Just throw a small turbo and run 200 hp. With such a small, agile, lightwieght car, I don't see how so many are complaining about the power.

Of course a newer, fuel injected 6 cylinder is going to beat a stock 20+ yo car. Put some mods in it and enjoy!!!

I ran 80 lbs of nitrous through that motor and now it is in my REPU. It was the motor that was in the car when I bought it, but it was a rebuild.... a damn good rebuild at that. I had a holley blue high flow pump with the 48 dellorto carbs. never got to run it a the track but it felt simalar to the set up I have now..... just lacking a bit of hp and low end torque. I do admit I like the twin turbos more....no more $40 whenever I need a faster car

Yeah, the FB is pretty slow but the great thing about rotaries is they have lots of potential (as mentioned HP figures above.) You can''t really pull out the same power with bolt on mods with an NA 4 banger without sacrificing a lot.

Eh, I'm guess I'm too used to my old TII which dyno'ed ~190hp to the wheels. I'd love to have a turbo 1st gen though.

maybe im just an idiot but I swear my FB with the 12a (original) with 192, 000 on it rips like nuts, its got fresh rb exhaust on it and it will be almost any stock car in a race... Im hoping to run a 15 second quater mile once I throw on a weber or a mikuni...

Power

Have to remember that you have a 1.1ltr motor. You can still get it to move alot faster. The 1st upgrade is the RB header system. This still needs to be used on any
motor 12a or 13b to gain Hp except no header used on the turbo. But on the turbo you still need to use the rest of the system.
Mikuni,Weber, or Dellorto will get you great results. I am very partial to the Mikuni because of it's simplicity and excellent throttle response.
Getting it to transfer power is the most crucial aspect. Which means putting on a lightened steel flywheel. this makes a world of difference as far as the acceleration response time.
Dumping the stock fan clutch and going with the electric also frees up the available
HP.
All of these mods are usually done no matter what motor you are running.
Getting used aftermarket components from fellow members will save you tons of money from buying brand new.
Their are many options you can go.
Get a 13 se motor and carb it. With a rb header system and mikuni it should be good for around 170-180hp approx.
You could run a S4 or S5 N/a motor and run the injection system with a mega squirt system or run the complete harness with the ecu.
Out of this you can get anywhere from 180-200hp depending on exhaust and size of secondary injectors controlled by mega squirt.
Any way you look at it, it costs money to make Hp. It all depends on how much is in your budget and how much work you are willing to do.

I agree with Fishbulb... Mine had an okay amount of power compared to what I had driven in the past year... Although the 12A and the 13B aren't "uber" as some say... You can still dust pesky civic hatchbacks....

I agree with RX7doctor-- The 12A has as much potential power as you have money to spend.

The question "what will it cost me to install a t11" has come up nearly every month in the four years I have been on the forum, its a pity few people bother to search. The average estimate is nearly $6000 for a good setup.

So plan to keep your car for several years as you will never get your money back.

It's like the way it's best to treat a women, a little kindness often gets you more than an expensive present!

Haha! My is peaking 130,000 on the odometer, however I don't plan on getting any mods later in the future because of a shortage of cash.

a good compression 12a can actually be pretty quick, no 12 second 1/4 mile machine, but definetaly a fun car. get some headers and a bigger carb. see what happens....

I would say it's pretty difficult, or at least inconvenient, to put together, and MAINTAIN a quick 12A in California. I'd have a bigger carb, better exhaust, no smog pump/pulley, etc. if I wouldn't have to put all the original crap back on every couple years. I live 5 minutes from Mazdatrix, but it's kind of a tease with all these damn laws in this state. After 2008 or so, my car should be pretty mean. (long time to wait!) Meanwhile I'll just learn how to drive the thing better, and autrocross it to take it to Willow or something. Or just buy an FD when I save some money...

California Laws

Some day, I hope that California declares the Rotary a 2-stroke engine for the purposes of smog, then it can enjoy the wonderful world of being smog-check free like diesel engines...

I agree on the previous post, definately. My 12a is stock not only because I'm dirt poor, but because doing any 'decent' modifications to it would require me to have a friend that runs a smog shop, because it would garuntee a visual failure even if the tailpipe was clean.

However, even completely stock, the FB has its advantages over every other car out there... even a Honda with a 'sport' suspension can't keep up with me in the turns (although I don't know whether its because they're chicken or not...) and all of my suspension is pretty much shot to crap :P I've always thought of the First Gens as an excellant driving car, even if it can't smoke a Camero off the line (yet...).

Ah well, get to pull her in to a stall here in the next few months, and start the full teardown / rebuild, and maybe I'll have more ideas other then the already hit ones of headers, exhaust, sterling carb, streetport, etc etc...

Lots of good threads for finding exceptionally cheap mods. The mech. secondaries one is such that I need to try ^.^

IF you want power and don't have much $$$ it is cheaper to just slam a SBC in it with a t-5. Can be done for less than it costs to re-build a rotary.

Ok, start the flames, I got my protective gear on now.

Cost effectivness of a 300hp N/A rotary is just not there. Not even a 220 hp one. Sure you can turbo it, but it is known that a turbo and a rotary = shorter life span. Port the hell out of it and it is no longer streetable. Not to mention that at $2.35 per gallon and 12 - 17 mpg around town it just doesn't add up. The v-8 swap will get you all the power you need and great gas milage.

I read that somewhere, I just can't remember where.......

I have thought about it because of the potential but damn everyone has a mustang and I love my car's style. This sucks I will probably end up keeping this car a good ammount of time because lack of money resources unless I could land a new job I am trying for then I could maybe afford to start modding the hell out've it.
I am wondering what kind've power everyone has gotten out've there 12a and what you all did with it. Who has the most power here without porting also?
