lost in registration hell

ok, so i made the mistake of buying a car with no title. I went to get it titled in my name, and they told me i had to have it appraised and insured for 1 and a half times the value of the car. There has to be an easier (cheaper) way of getting the 7 in my name. Any suggestions would be great.

What happened to the title? If the previous owner lost the title, there's instructions here: http://www.dmv.org/ak-alaska/registration-faqs.php.

seller said he couldn't find it, and i thought it would have been easier to get a replacement. If i had known, i would have had him do it prior to. thanks slashdawg
