Lost All my Engine Oil thanks to faulty Oil Filter Pedestal....

So Last night, Decided to Take my Car for a drive...... 100km away from home, I am driving and suddenly my Low Oil Pressure Light is Triggered. I Quickly Pulled over, thinking it may be simply a malfunction. I restart the engine while I stare at my Mechanical Oil Pressure gauge.... Reads 0.

I Pop the hood to find Oil covering everything in my engine bay, while my Oil Filer has been launched. The Re-Speed Oil Pedestal BROKE. I have Never used anything But my hand to tighten my Oil Filter, and Yet this piece broke. I am Still unsure as to wheather I have any Engine damage, But I must credit my own decision to install a Low Pressure switch as to having minimized any possible damage. I suggest Everyone to check their Pedestal. There is no excuse for this to happen. As you can see, the threads have stripped clean, and it looks to have been machined from too thin of Aluminum.

Attached are Photos. The orange piece inside the Pedestal looks to be maybe a Piece of Locktite using during construction of the Piece.

LOL, you beat me to it. I was going to say that it was because he used a Fram Filter.

Seriously though, surprised here because Billy makes a very good product. Hopefully everything is ok..

Hey Jimmy,

We're sorry that happened, there were just under 200 of the pedestal parts sold (combined of version one and 2 more so of the second though) and I haven't heard of anything like that happening. They are made out of a single piece and not 2 pieces for clarity to 82transam.

Both the first and second version have the exact same center section though. The thickness of the sidewall is about 0.22 of an inch which is not an easy feat to break off. Can you take off the filter and post up some more picture of the broken part?

I blew an oil hose and did and immediate shut down with no harm, seems you likely shut it down soon enough.

Actually Jimmy, I'll be in the Toronto area tomorrow, I'll call you up when I leave and if its alright I'd like to stop by and grab that part to further inspect it. I can also bring up a version 2 for you at no charge to replace it if you still want to give another one a try.

FRAM!

This is my theory.

The FRAM blocked oil flow and the oil pressure blew it right off.

FRAM is such garbage your car rejected it.

I would be interested in seeing what it looks like inside your filter.
Use tin snips and cut the shell off or turn it off on a lathe. Be careful not to disrupt the internals and post pictures.

I have worked in a machine shop and looks like two piece to me. That's how I see this being made.
Looks like the threads got ripped out from the pressure. It's just my theory because FRAMS do not flow well.

Subscribed.

Now that's the kinda response we wanna see. I always forgot about the deal I got when there's a problem and no support. Good job! Here we have a new business owner taking accountability for the brand name of the product this company manufactured. Think of how many people would blame the previous owner and shrug off any interest. Hands on solution! Looking forward to seeing the results, and I concur with the fram filter inspection too.

This pedestal would be from a batch of 30 that were manufactured back in 2006. These were manufactured for a customer to sell under his own name to his specification. We sold around 10 under our name.

We heard of 3 failures back in 2006 when that customer basically through us under the bus. I responded by re-calling all pedestals and had them welded on my dime within 24 hours of receipt.

We then re-designed the part to our level of expectation and have never had a problem again. Since then they have been 1 piece without the ability to fail. Since the 2006 re-design there have been over 250 units sold.

Do not confuse the 2006 re-design with the recent "Version 2" design. The Version 2 design was to incorporate the 3/8" NPT hole for mechanical temperature probes and was not due to any issues.

Looks as though you did not receive the recall emails or purchased it used from someone who did not send it back for welding.

Sam will take care of you.

Good to see the excellent responses from both the previous and new owner of ReSpeed.

I don't see why a thread for this was made unless you failed to get responses from
ReSpeed already and this was a last resort.

Did you even talk to them before posting this? I think not. Try harder next time.

Yeah, I'm not used to seeing such a harsh title relating to a Respeed product. But I can understand that you might have been very upset when this happened, and might not have been thinking about the best way to handle the situation.

But I have no doubt that these guys will take great care of you, whether you hurt their feelings or not. In the end, I'm sure your relationship with Respeed will be even better than before.

Best of luck...

Gotta say I'm highly impressed with the vendor response.

Go to pretty much any big-name parts manufacturer with a complaint about failure of a 5-year-old 'performance' aftermarket part, and they'd either stare at you til you went away, or laugh uncontrollably.

Hell, many new car makers will void your warranty just for using aftermarket parts.

Good on you, Re-Speed both former and present. Way to raise the bar!

I personally talked to Jimmy today, and ill be meeting him at his shop later on today. he lives about 2 hours away from me, but I don't mind doing that detour to help him out with that.

We're here to promote and support our product and not reject any defects that are at our fault. Whether it was bought from me or Billy, it was bought under the same brand name and not that owners name.

I hope you're in business as long as I own my 7!!!

Got to agree with many of the above posts....Dude (OP)...try to settle a dispute civilly before you torching somebody....just not right to give somebody (anybody) a bad name before you even give them a chance to make it right. That Karma thing is gonna getchya.

That wasn't Jimmys intention by any means, nor his brothers (whom actually posted this up here, jimmy himself hasn't been on in a while from what he's told me over the phone) he wasn't sure what to do or expect, but he was thrilled to hear that I'm giving him a free replacement with a new part.

Maybe you should read bwaites' reply a little closer. You've got it all confused. It
was one of 30 limited first released, they were all recalled and the product has
since been redesigned to a single piece, shippped over 200 units and had no
other failures since.

Nice try but spreading FUD like this won't work here.

until this thread, i had no idea that Billy no longer owned ReSpeed. as far as the thread title is concerned, i believe it could have been better if he had left out the "... thanks to ..."-part, but aside from that, i think it's just fine. it stated facts without trying to solicit any useless emotional dribble. once i read the first post, i did not get any feeling of malice. (then come to find it wasn't even Jimmy54 himself).

anyway, i have to commend ReSpeed (dj55b/Sam) as well for the response, the follow-through and support of a customer. it is refreshing, indeed. however, i tend to think the need to go above and beyond is directly related to the facts: (a) this is a part failure, (with some history), and (b) he is a "true" member of our community, not just some person that saw sales potential and signed up. he was one of "us" before he owned the business and i think that makes all the difference.

Yes, I think it's combination of low tensile strength and may also be to fine of threads.

Yes, The wall looks way to thin but it would of broke at the base if that was the issue. This looks like a tread rip.

It would be nice to see a before picture and we already have the after.

Yes, FRAM is garbage im just trying to spread the word and get to the bottom of things. From what iv read they don't flow well, to restrictive.

OP, I agree that you should of contacted RE-Speed first. It's great that they made good with you and would do the same for future customers.

As long as you shut your engine off right away it should be fine.
