CA Loses power at highway speed

Just got a 1984 GSL-SE - automatic. Had been sitting around for awhile so I replaced the fuel filter right away. When on the freeway, and I am giving it a little pedal, after a half mile or so, the engine won't respond, seems like the carb is running out of gas. Push on the gas, but zero response. If I let off on the pedal, after a quarter mile it will start responding again. And then I smell gas like crazy - what do you think, is it flooding or being starved for fuel? Have run a couple of tanks of gas through it already and it doesn't seem to help.
Any ideas...??

Confusing info. GSL-SE was not sold with an auto trans, nor a carb. GSL was, though. I'm guessing it is actually a GSL with a carbed 12A.
I would look into the fuel system further. I suspect it either has a restriction in the fuel line(s) or is sucking air into the lines from cracks in the hoses. Either are highly likely, when a car has been allowed to sit for a year or more.

Thanks for the tips; you're right, it's a 12A GSL. It's got a new fuel filter but I'll check it again and look for plugs in the fuel lines.

The fuel pump could also not be providing enough flow.

after a tank insopection, rebuild the carb and replace the fuel filter. run some good quality fuel system cleaner through as well. inspect your check valve in the return line off of the carb for proper function. replace the plugs with new NGK's and consider getting new wires or testing you current wires, inspect or replace the cap and rotor and flush your coolant. check ALL of the vacuum lines. replace the oil and filter, as well as the air filter.
