Loose Steering

Hello Experts,

I have a NON-PS GSL-SE, and I am noticing about a 1"-2" Playing in the steering on the highway. I am assuming this isn't natural play for a no power assist.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Ken

Hello, and welcome to the board.

What you have described is a very common problem for our cars. If you run a search, you will find more info than you want. Basically, start by checking all front end parts for play (tie rod ends, idler arm, etc.). Replace anything that needs it, then see how it feels. If you still have play, then you will have to look at the gear box itself (there is a big write-up on how to adjust this, follow it closely). Good luck!

Yeah, what he said. I just want to reitterate that the cars are old, and the bushings need to be replaced idealy. The most common one I see is the idler arm bushing since its close to the exhaust it dies quickly. The others aer also probably needing repair, but the idler arm bushings are probably gone all together. Mine were. About 10 minutes to install, and I think I (over) paid like $25 at the dealer for them. I remember I needed them quickly as I was going on a spur of the moment 3 hour road trip to another state and wanted a nice smooth ride so I was rushed to get my cruise control hooked up, and wanted to get those replaced as well so I went ahead and got em at the dealer because they were in stock and I could get them and have them installed before I hit the road that same day. Anyway, check it all out, and good luck.

EDIT: The idler arm is the thing on the passenger side frame rail under the hood. It looks like a shaft with a big nut/bolt thing on the top, and has an arm hooked to the steering linkage.
