looking for a few answers

greetings all. need some questions answered please (for 84 gs).

(A) after searching past posts is this thinking right in regards to sourcing tach problem?

1. make sure connections on trailing coil (attached to frame) are clean/not corroded.

2. test trailing igintor attached to dizzy to see if it works. what would the car perform like if it did not work?

3. check to see if wires are still attached behind tach.

(B) i am wondering what is the best material to use for plugging various leftover openings after getting rid of cats and improving exhaust. i got an r/b system and am reluctant to permanently crimp/pinch off (as instructions suggest) in case of unforseeable future circumstances...

(C) replacing my fuel filter and just confirming: the arrow points to the fuel pump line right?

(D) and finally on the underside of my car (midframe-driver's side) there appears to be a cable with what appears to be a sensor of some sort. right now it's wrapped around a bar underneath the car but it definitely can extend to the connecting pipe and even seems to perfectly fit the opening where the air pipe would attach. anyone know what this is? what it does and is it important?

Sounds like you got the right idea for the tach... The trailing not working properly will lead to backfires, maybe less power... Follow what you said there for checking it, thats a great place to start..

B: You can always use a piece of hose and shove a bolt in there and clamp it. I used for a long time a piece of hose with a lug bolt in there.. But when I wanted to clean it up, I just pinched the openings and welded them shut...

C: That is the exhaust system over heat sensor, pull the drivers seat, and unplug and remove it. Its unimportant unless you have cats on the car.. Tells when the exhaust system is too hot.

greetings,

following up my tach issue:

i've only got two wires on the trailing coil. i think that an old post on this subject said that there are three -one attached to the negative, two to the positive? is this correct?

anyway w/regards to the (+) wire, it was wrapped with electrical tape. it hid some exposed wire which had what looks like green oxidation. would it be okay to cut just before the stuff begins and re-attach a new connector?

Yeah, the tach on my 82 doesn't work either. I checked both of the coils and no extra wires. Just the single negative and positive connections to make them work I have started tearing the dash apart in hopes to trace the wire through the wall and into the engine compartment to see where it has gone. Wish I still had my signal tracing equipment from my old paging/phone job. Good luck!!
