I am interested in hearing opinions regarding the best sources for learning about the operation of the RE-EGI engine, transmission and overall powertrain found in the GSL-SE.

Certainly the Factory Service Manual comes to mind but I wonder if anyone has any favorite sources or strong web links to information regarding the intricacies of the engine operation and management, aside from this forum, of course.

I owned a 1980 SA for a number of years (why did I ever trade it ) in the mid-late 80s and loved that car, but never really "knew" enough about it . I always wanted a GSL-SE and pretty much have decided that when the right one comes along I will "indulge".

In the meantime, I want to "go to school" and will immerse myself here and learn as much as I possibly can about the GSL-SE but just wondered if anyone had sources that they cared to suggest.

First thing to ask yourself is do you like working on cars? Do you think your capable to do some major engine work? or do you have tons of money to just throw around? If you answer yes to any or all of these then read the following.

Always read the archives and use the search tool very often. Then you want to find the online manual (its in various peoples sigs). Then you want to look over the parts supplies web pages and see the various prices on parts. Then you can evaluate how much you are willing to service on your car. That will give you a good idea how much you really want one. I love my GSL-SE but I do all the work on it, and have rebuilt a few motors. So I'm not afraid to tackle any problems that might come up or do the work to upgrade some of the major components without fear of causing more problems. Rotaries are fun but unfortunately the GSL-SE models take lots of work and have some very complicated systems like the EFI and emissions. Especially for a 20+ year old car.

Yeah ... no worries here. Love to work on cars and figure things out and make them work as designed or better. I am sure the GSL-SE EFI is not nearly as complicated as the RX-8 EFI and PCM I've been driving for the last 3 years. I am just looking to go retro and "old skool" ... thanks for the feedback. I will remember to stay well grounded.

The rx8 and newer vehciles that have OBD2 are much more friendlier then the GSL-Se's Fi system. It is one of the most tempermental systems I have ever dealt with. Just when you think you have figured it all out and got it running smoothly, Bam it takes a turn and back to the drawing board.

Very, very true indeed. I repair complex late model engine and emmissions control systems all day with ease. But then I come home and the SE will test me for months on end. I'm going to look at the first link. Good information on this system has been out of my reach so far so I've always had to figure out things on my own and just when I think I've got it all figured out and running smoothly....BAM. LOL

Good luck with your quest for a GSL-SE, you're in it for the right reasons. I'll help when I can. Lots of boards with drawing on them over here.
