looking at a 1g rx7

there's a 1982 rx7 for sale near where i live. it sounds like the last owner (2 years ago) took great care of it. the current owners live on a farm and have only driven it about 4k miles! apparently, the kid with the car is about 6'1" and doesn't really like manual transmissions...
the kicker is that the motor was replaced about 20k miles ago with a fuel injected model, and it has a new interior (as of about 2 years ago).
they're asking $3k for it, but i don't think they know much about the car, how much should i offer? i'm thinking that i could start out at $2k CASH on the spot.
i want it because i need a new daily driver, my saturn's tq converter sounds like it's dying.
let me know what you all think.
i'm going to look at it sometime this week.

HellO ? search this has been over and over and over, and over, and over.
look for rust, mechanical things. and kick the tires too, that works great.

how did they convert the 82 to a FI system? get some more info.

The price does sound fair for what has been done, but we can't see the car.
more info, more pix, and of course more info.

you've got to drive the car !! drive it hard too. find out what works and what doesn't, windows, A/C, wipers, look for rust in the wheel wells, pull a storage bin out and check for rust. also around the rear hatch glass and if there is a sun roof remove that and check there for rust, you know 'shake it down'

Make sure that the engine is cold when you first start it. Then take it for an easy warm up and then drive it hard. Best thing would be to get a rotor head to go with you. Beer is often a good incentive.

that's what i wanted, i don't know what typical problems there are with older rx7s. i understand the basics of looking for a car, i just wanted to know if there might be something that is specific to rx7s

today we get to the home of the people with the rx7. their youngest kid (looks like he's 18) drives it sparingly, he's 6'4" (my mistake) and wants room to haul more than one passenger.
anyway, it's charcoal grey (paint is in good shape) with a big MAZDA banner on the windshield, a white NOS 2"x3" sticker on each side in front of the doors, and some stickers that look metallic to give the illusion of the windows being bolted in (just the rear 2). inside he has yellow and black floormats and a yellow and black steering wheel cover... it works well enough with the black interior.
anyway, the tranny felt really good, the engine was new and pulled nicely all the way to redline... but apparently they don't understand what a carbeurator is . the steering was super sloppy (think about 30 degrees of movement before i got any response) and the tranny sounded odd; after driving, while sitting and idling, it sounded like a fan running, until i pushed in the clutch... but would resume after letting the clutch out.
i told him i would give him 1800 for it
dip$h[ts... wouldn't take less than 2800 for it, and seem to think that nothing is wrong with the steering...
