I was in a similar predicament. I had a set of normal wheels, which take the "short" lug bolts and a set of 79-80 wheels (with R-compound tires), which required the long lug bolts. What a PITA to keep track of 16 extra lug bolts and swap them out every time I switched wheels/tires at the track. Also, the long ones are not available locally, so if I lost one I had to carry a spare or I wouldn't pass tech. I also hate lug bolts, comparred to lug studs and nuts. So, recently, I bought some long screw-in lug studs to replace both sets of lug studs. I also chucked the studs on the lathe and machined down the threads at the end. We do this in Grand Am Cup racing for "hot" tire changing pit stops (we glue the nuts inside the wheels bolt hole and jam the wheels over the studs. The nuts break free of the rim and conveniently hang on the end of the studs, so you can quickly hit them with the impact wrench), but it is a nice mod even for the street because you can set the nuts on the end of the studs before wrenching them down. I also opted for 19mm lug nuts, which I like because (1) I already have a 19mm socket in my travel tool kit and (2) 19mm = 3/4 inch, which is more common. The lug nuts I chose were also open-ended, conical-seat "bulge" nuts. These have more thread depth and don't dissapear into the socket (the edge sits against the rim of the socket). Anyway, it's a great upgrade for any car using lug bolts. I ordered the screw in lug studs and conical bulge nuts from Prestige Wheel. Total cost was about $50.
They might not look as clean as shorter lug studs or lug bolts, but they let me use both sets of wheels without the headache of keeping track of two sets of lug bolts. BTW, you can also just buy shorter lug studs, if you don't like the look of studs sticking out that far. And, yes, I know I need hub centric wheel adaptors...that's the next project.
EDIT: I forgot to specify that the proper size is 12mm x 1.5.

Sorry for the cut and paste but this is what I posted on a thread long ago. The longer wheel studs I purchased from Prestige have performed flawlessly.
Just my .02.. I've recently used screw in studs on my 85GSL. I found a set of old school BBS 15x7 wheels and the stock lub bolts were too short for them. The screw in studs seemed the best bet, with acorn type lug nuts to attach them. Well- I found several of those screw in studs working loose and they did so in quick order!
I ditched them quickly and bit the bullet for the correct length 12x1.5mm thread/pitch lug bolts. You can find them here: http://www.prestigewheel.com/Image204040c.asp
Figure out what type of seat you need (ball or cone)..measure them correctly and drive on. I have not had a problem since.
If my only option was to use studs- I would make sure they get welded on. Forget the screw-ins (IMO)
