the long lost valve

I seek advice from the rx-7 omniscient people on this forum. I just started working on an 84 rx-7 and it seems to have a fuel problem. Somedays the engine will floud itself while it sits and other days it wont get gas at all. We had other rx-7's and we sold a parts car to a guy and he told my dad that there is a valve that commonly goes wrong and he even pointed it out. Unfortunately I was not there when the guy was there, and my dad doesnt remember.... >.< But let me get to the point. Does anyone know what valve that is? Do you even think that the problem is infact this mystery valve? Any ideas or tidbits would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I don't know about a valve, but if this is a carbed 12a, the fuel tank vent may be plugged.
The fuel tank vents thru the small hose attached to the charcoal canister on the passenger side front strut tower. There is a tiny restrictor inside the hose nipple that corrodes, and plugs up. I used a 1/8" drill bit to remove it on my '83, and solved this issue.
However, if you have a GSL-SE with fuel injection, there are other issues that can cause this.

The only valve that goes wrong (that I can think of) is the Air Control Valve, but I'm not sure if that would cause flooding.

The infamous Se injection system,lol.

Welcome to the forum. Owning a Se will defintely test your patience.

I'm going to give you some basic info, but i recommend that you go to the FAQ's and do alot of reading also.

1st thing i have everyone check. Turn the key to the on posistion, go back to the fuel pump and see if it is on. It should not be on.If it is the AFM is bad.

Fuel injectors leaking are a common problem also for flooding. You can try and find a cleaner called Bg44k which is available at alot of dealerships or good repair shops. Run a can of that thru there. It's expensive, like 25.00 a can but worth it. Or you can just send the injectors out to witch hunters and have them cleaned.

Generally as a rule lack of fuel is usually not the problem. You don't generally get no fuel and flooding at the same time. The se's are known for the flooding problems.

Flooding can also be cause by the only other sensor for FI management which is the coolant temp sensor. A loose or corroded connection will cause major problems. Also if the sensor is bad.
Check those first, but remember to do the reading in the FAQ's, you will need it if you are going to own the SE. Good luck. Feel free to pm me if you need more help.

Along with the above listed items, SE's are also famous for flooding issues if they are started, but not allowed to reach full operating temp before being shut off.
