Little help with ignition

Hey guys,

I took the rat's nest off my car, and decided to clean out the engine bay and stuff while I had tha carb off. So being the intelligent one, I took EVERYTHING in the ignition apart, coils, plugwires, dist cap and all thinking to myself "Oh the trusty Heynes will help me afterwords!".

Basicly, I can't rememeber which is leading coil, which is trailing. I know I got the plugwires hooked right, that's too easy (Leading, Trailing, Rotor1, Rotor2). But the rest, ouch! Now I know the wires AREN'T Supposed to be crossed ... I kinda got it to studder ( ). . ANYWAYS ... does anybody have a nice pic of how the wires have to be hooked up?

The way I rememeber it: the coil with the green cap on it is leading, the black cap is trailing. BUT am I right ? I'd rather know that that's all hooked up right before moving to possible vacuum problems. Just to be on the safe side ... The rotor closest to the rad is 1, and the other is 2 right ??

Thanks in advance guys! ... Trusty heynes tip : When they heynes says "mark your wires with tape before disconnecting", listen to them!

*Eric bangs head* DOH .. read first , then do it.. STUPID !

Eric

ok you can figure it out by looking at the dizzy. see where the wires (not the big ones for the spark plugs) come out of the dizzy, there should be two places, each place should be closer to the L or T on the dizzy, thats which coil they go to, so then follow the wires to the coils and you can see which one is wired up for L and which is for T..

hope it makes sence, i could show you easily but to try and describve it is harder

Accually not much happens if you reverse them. I ran my car 4 months with them reversed and nothing bad happend.

Your problem probably lies in all the vacuum lines you removed. Quite simply, you have to plug them all off except the distributor vaccuum advance and crankcase vent. And I think the gas tank vent runs under vaccuum too.

Yes, something happens if you reverse them. Your timing gets screwed up.

leading coil is the one nearer the driver, trailing coil is the one nearer the front of the car. Is this what was being asked?

just follow the ignitor wires, the front one on the dizzy is the leading ignitor. I think it will be yellow with green stripe. that will designate when the coil fires and then just hook up the plug wires from coil to cap accordingly

ok i lied the wire your looking for is yellow with blue stripe. yellow and green are for trailing and yellow and blue are leading. the coils themselves are the same so just figure out which goes where..... This is all assuming you didn't unhook the ignitors. If so then just follow the colored wire from the front ignitor on the dizzy and then you should be set.

Hey Guys,

I'm the one who did Eric's Rat's nest removal with him, and trimmed his Nikki, and also neglected to mark his cables, all in one shot!

Basically, we want to know:
- Rotor1 is closest to Rad/Fan right? (yes/no)
- Leading Coil is which one?

And would love someone to post a pic of their wires, just so we can see if we're doing it right. We want to eliminate problems one at a time. Once we know that our coils are hooked up right, and hooked to the distributor right, and that the distributor is hooked to our plugs right and we're not flooded, THEN we can start looking at vaccuum and fuel problems.

Yeah, we didn't touch the distributor or ignitors.

So follow the wires from the dizzy:

yellow + blue= Leading Coil
yellow + green= Trailing Coil

Leading Coil goes to big honkin 'L' on dist cap
Trailing Coil goes to big honkin 'T' on dist cap

L1 on dist cap goes to the lower (leading) plug on rotor closest to Radiator (Rotor1)
T1 on dist cap goes to top (trailing) plug on rotor closest to Radiator (Rotor1)

L2 on dist cap goes to lower (leading) plug on rotor closest to Firewall (Rotor2)
T2 on dist cap goes to top (trailing) plug on rotor closest to Firewall (Rotor2)

HAVE I GOT THIS RIGHT?

I really hope so, 'cause if what I wrote is right, this is worth archiving hehe.. Someone post a pic and confirm what I just wrote plz!

I know the below is right:

Leading Coil goes to big honkin 'L' on dist cap
Trailing Coil goes to big honkin 'T' on dist cap

L1 on dist cap goes to the lower (leading) plug on rotor closest to Radiator (Rotor1)
T1 on dist cap goes to top (trailing) plug on rotor closest to Radiator (Rotor1)

So if we put all the posts together we just have to run out and see if the yellow/blue wire goes to the coil nearest the driver, and we've got confirmation

I love this forum!

Eric, go check your wires... now!

jon i said to check the colors of the wires coming from the ignitors because stock, the front coil nearest the rad is trailing. However on my car, the PO swapped them around for some reason. Checking the ignitor wiring will tell you for sure.
