Limited Slip Differential Noise

Recently my limited slip diff has more slip than limited. Pulling away from a stop into a right or left hand turn causes a clicking/light shuddering/slipping sensation from the rear. Reverse also has a similar noisy characteristic. Three years ago the diff gear oil was changed. Would anyone know what the problem would be? Is there a way to adjust the diff or what kind of oil can be added to stop the slippage?

Btw,,,,it is a '85 GSL SE with 42,000 miles on the clock.

Thanks for your help.

Did you change the oil in it? Whenever you change the oil in the diff you should put in limited slip diff additive with the gear oil. Some gear oil brands have that additive already in their oil though. That will usually take the problem you're describing away. Reverse whines in most cars, most likely nothing to worry about.

Seconding the LSD additive to the gear oil.

As for reverse, the forward gears in most transmissions are a helical cut. The reverse gears are straight cut however, and thus make a whiny noise. Honda's are especially noisy.

I've been using royal purple gear oil on my diff and it works just fine. You should check for leaks it might be dry . Are you sure that it isn't coming from a bad rear axle bearing?
