lighter is better
ok here we go i was thinking a list of all the things that could be taken out of a 1st gen to lighten it up would be helpful... a couple of rules... don't be an *** and start telling people to take out the seats and steering wheel... and if you recommend something for removel say what it does and what happens if it's gone and what it might have to be replaced with. if there rules could possibly be followed it think this thread might be useful to a lot of people. thnx

Airflow is my life
Sound deadener tar, emissions, lighter exhaust, smaller/relocated battery, 2nd gen waterpump housing, alum radiator, removal of cruise control, hot start assist, sub zero system, windshield washer. Hows that for starters?

Stock carb / intake manifold, emissions system and associated garbage (HEAVY!)... get something better to replace it with
Stock seats (heavy heavy)...
Obviously spare tire, jack, tools you have in the back, stereo, etc....
The whole storage bin assembly...
Leather interior if you have it, power windows, etc; basically any 'options' you may have...
The sound deadening carpet pads all around the car (hatch, storage bins, firewall, etc). Ditto the sound deadening tar if you want.
Forget about heavy subwoofers, amps, etc...

Re: lighter is better
You can also remove the dash and the dash supports.
Then of course the heater fan... this is next. I just removed the dash and metal supports... so barren inside now! Need a fibergalss dash to replace it!

first gen seats are very light compared to sec gen or go fiberglass
remove:
carpet
sound deading material
buy a car without a sunroof (100lbs lighter)
all a/c stuff (really heavy)
move battery behind seat (get light weight battery)
no radio or amps
look in to fiberglass hood and fenders or even fiberglass fender flares. this will let you cut out the rear 1/4s
try to find fiberglass bumpers or have them made
go to a light fuel cell
remove dash and put ALM in with carbonfiber gauge's
put in carbonfiber NOS tank (very light)
if you want to get really trick remove ft end sub frame and install light weight ft end. this should remove about 200 lbs or so.
put in rollbar and start drilling out useless metal spots.
IE small circle's for weight savings
remove glass and put in light weight lexan
remove wiper motor
remove heater
door internals or get fiberglass doors
and best of all magneze-um<-- cant spell) feather weight wheels
carbon fiber steering wheel
this should keep ya going for awile and have fun

Damn, it did start!
How do you get 100 lbs for the sunroof? I can not see that much weight in the sunroof and mounting accesories.

I wouldn't recomend the fibreglass doors or even bumpers (unless you retain the stock bumper reinforcer) for a street driven car
and I don't know if its the same in the states but some UK insurance companies are very funny when it comes to replacing panels with fibreglass (as in they won't touch you car with a barge pole)
