light weight drive shaft

light weight drive shaft

I have a aluminum drive shaft from a crown vic police interceptor. Any chance I can make it fit?

no, well, not cheaper than a complete custom one. if you want an aluminum one, get ahold of a place like The Driveshaft shop and have them build you one.

What would a lightwieght driveshaft improve?

Response the the Rear Wheels? What are the advantages to it?

its the same principle as a light weight flywheel. less weight the less initial inertia to get it spinning. less better response to the rear

Its likely to be heavier since its built for a much more powerful and bigger car.
Our stock driveshafts are pathetically small because our cars are light and our engines have no torque. Just cause something is made from a lighter material doesnt mean its automatically lighter than what you have.
When making a custom driveline,first you select a U-joint thats rated high enough to handle the power your going to make.Then you select your tube material to save weight....steel,aluminum,carbon fiber.The Crown Vic shaft is probably 3-4 times overkill for a 1st gen.Sure,itll never break,but its going to be many times too heavy for what you need,probably heavier than the stock steel 1st gen shaft.
Apples and oranges.....

JiimLab (resident FD **** know-it-all), looked into the amount that changing from a steel to aluminum driveshaft would help with intertia. Because of it's tiny diameter, an aluminum driveshaft serves no other purpose than to lighten the car overall. I'll see if i can dig up his post about light weight drive shafts.

o.k ooking into a lighter one is not worth the time for no gain. I am a truck guy.
The rx7 is new for me. i used to stand by there is no replacement for displacement
