light weight drive shaft

I have a aluminum drive shaft from a crown vic police interceptor. Any chance I can make it fit?

no, well, not cheaper than a complete custom one. if you want an aluminum one, get ahold of a place like The Driveshaft shop and have them build you one.

What would a lightwieght driveshaft improve?

Response the the Rear Wheels? What are the advantages to it?

its the same principle as a light weight flywheel. less weight the less initial inertia to get it spinning. less better response to the rear

I didn't think the stock driveshaft was all that heavy.

Its likely to be heavier since its built for a much more powerful and bigger car.
Our stock driveshafts are pathetically small because our cars are light and our engines have no torque. Just cause something is made from a lighter material doesnt mean its automatically lighter than what you have.
When making a custom driveline, first you select a U-joint thats rated high enough to handle the power your going to make. Then you select your tube material to save weight....steel,aluminum,carbon fiber. The Crown Vic shaft is probably 3-4 times overkill for a 1st gen.Sure, itll never break, but its going to be many times too heavy for what you need, probably heavier than the stock steel 1st gen shaft.
Apples and oranges.....

JiimLab (resident FD **** know-it-all), looked into the amount that changing from a steel to aluminum driveshaft would help with intertia. Because of it's tiny diameter, an aluminum driveshaft serves no other purpose than to lighten the car overall. I'll see if i can dig up his post about light weight drive shafts.
