Liftback struts

I am looking for replacement struts for the liftback (85) with rear wiper. Do not want used. Wife is tired of using plumber's helper on her garaged one owner SE with 52,000 miles. Dealers want $287. which seems high. Any referrals would be appreciated.

I replaced the one on the left side on my car and put the stronger of the two old ones on the right side. The aftermarket one I got came from Advance Auto or one of those type of places. The reason you can't use it on the side with the wiper is because of the wiring that goes along with the wiper. You can either re-do the wiring and use the aftermarket one on that side too. The wiring is the only reason they are not listed.

Advance Auto carries Strong Arm brand, which is the one you want to get. Will work with the rear wiper. Get two to prevent stressing the hinges due to racking.

Right on.

Just look for some with a 27" span when fully open. Unless.....someone has a strong arm part number already.....and they can just post it.

Canuckian Tire claims to have discontinued that model #. I've been trying since last spring to get them to bring 'em in (when I'm in Canada, that is. No luck in LA either)

careful with replacing just one side. One new/one loose strut puts pressure on only one side of the glass while the other one sags imperceptibly, but enough to strain the glass. There is no metal frame on our hatches to take the strain, so the glass could crack.

I'm not so much worried about the glass, but I did have a hinge EXPLODE on me once in a cloud of white smoke. Apparently the previous owner fixed it with plaster or something.

Right on.

Just for future reference, is it easy to remove the wiring and add it to the strong arm struts?

I finally replaced mine from Kragen about 2 weeks ago. Best damn $54 bucks I've spent in the 7 years that I have owned it. I bought one and had to order the second. As far as the wiring for the wiper is concerned, just cut off that heat wrap and rewire. You can either get new heat wrap or use black zip ties like me. I ended up taking my wiper motor out anyways last week. I kinda like the clean look in the back. Besides.. she's a sunny day weekend car now anyways.

Just picked one up at Canadian Tire in Montreal. Wanted to test it before getting the 2nd one for the right side on my 85 GSL-SE. The instructions say they work with the electrical connections for the wiper.

Mantiis. You should be able to get them at Canadian Tire. The Strongarm model is #4709 and the CanTire part# is 22-3632-6. They are on sales this week for $27.36 (CDN) each. $9.12 off

Hope this helps you out.
