Lets talk gas tanks

I have a problem, I need a gas tank for my 83-13bt project. The one I have is probably not usable and I'm starting to think about a fuel cell. Is there anyone out there that is using a safe fuel cell thats mounted under the car?

The tank on the left (rusty one) is the one I have to use so you know why I'm not too excited about using it.

A fuel cell would be about the ultimate in safety... if I had a purpose-built car, I'd probably want to get one. Any chance, though, that you could have your stock gas tank "dipped" for a couple of days to remove the rust, and then get it treated with a sealer, and then painted? Of course, if rust has made the metal of the gas tank too thin, best to play it safe..

Just out of curiosity, why are fuel cells so safe? Is it simply structural integrity?
