are there any real advantages to putting a bigger coil in?
can you get an upgraded coil off the shelf for the RX? or are they too didfferent from waht piston engines use?

I bought the standard red MSD blasters for mine. Did I notice a difference? Yep, they are bright red, thats all I can be sure of. DLDFIS im hoping, assuming, and reading would be the best way to go, then you get the whole spark instead of half.

You won't notice a difference from upgrading coils unless one of yours is identified as being bad, already. Usually, what happens is that they begin to leak, and the oil insulator that surrounds the coil pack will dissipate to the point that it no longer insulates, and then you start to get a lower intensity spark until you have no spark at all.
I think the aftermarket coils are good preventative maintenance to replace a 20 year old part, but for performance, unless you go to a system that requires a super efficient spark heat and length, then you're not going to see a benefit for a normal street tuned car.
Once you move up to MSD or other electronic ignition that controls coils, you might see some benefit... on a dyno. For the money, it's a cheap upgrade to ensure that your car is working at what it was designed to. HTH,

From my limited knowledge of my own car, I have read that the trailing in a SA doesn't fire all the time. I think you would be in for erratic tach signal but I don't know.
