Lack of power

Ok, so I borrowed an ignitor from a friend and we got FD_Less's car running today. He owes us big . 2 things I noticed when I drove it that I need more info on as I'm trying to get this thing so he can drive it on a 1000 mile trip (still not thrilled by that idea)

First thing, my FB had an electric fan so I have no idea how the clutch fans are supposed to act, but is it normal at 6k rpm for the damn car to sound like you have a C-5 or a F-18 parked on the roof at full thrust? It was extremely loud so I decided not to go past 6k.

Second, the thing doesn't seem to have any power. I had just driven my friend's '83 earlier that day and it just seemed night and day difference. I'm wondering if the secondaries are not opening. I tried to push them open with a screw driver when we got back, and it was tough, and when they opened, I got some dense white smoke coming back up through them. Also, I never got that nice little kick when you hit 4k like normal. Is there a good way to test whether they are opening or not? The engine ran smooth all the way up, seemed ok down below, just didn't seem to have any pull in the upper ranges.

Thanks guys

The sound of the jet on the roof isn't so much an F-18, but more of a mellow F-14 Tomcat turbofan sound.

Honestly, my car is loud. I can't hear 'fan' noises so much as engine noise, but if you turn the stereo up enough it won't matter. To put it mildly, my car isn't a good 'conversation' car. I don't know anything about your lack of power though...

first off, there is a sig thief in our presence.

secondly, not enough info. sounds like the clutch is stuck on the fan. you might also have a clogged cat if it is still on the car.

cletus: Have you considered converting your secondaries to mechanical? There's a few good posts about that in the 1stGen Archive.

As for that sig theif, I see him not.

It's not my car so I'm not doing anything to it besides standard repair unless the owner tells me to, but currently his is off training in the desert somewhere (he's in the army) and unreachable, so for now, no mechanical secondaries.

The car seems to run just fine in the 2k-3k range. Never bogs down or anything, just doesn't pull worth a damn in the upper ranges. It could be time for a rebuild though too. It smokes quite a good bit on start up and has 165k on it. I need more time to play with it I guess to better describe everything.
