The King of all Muffler Threads

After searching through endless amounts of exhaust & muffler threads, I have come to the conclusion that this is necessary for our archives. We all know that the RB power pulse muffler is a great choice, but many have used other options successfully. Borla, Dynomax, and Magnaflow to name a few. I think we should all post the following info based on our collective experience:

1) Muffler Name, Part Number & Brand
2) Place of Purchase & Price
3) How Long You Have Used It
4) Ability To Withstand Heat ( 1 being gasoline, 10 bottom of the NASA re-entry capsule)
5) Noise rating ( 1 being a butterfly's wings, 10 so loud your ears bleed and explode)
6) Sound clips if possible!
7) Any pictures, video, or extra information you see important

Please post away guys so that we can compile all of our useful info in one spot! We need to have a master list of what mufflers are noisy, which ones perform well, and which ones burn up in the fiery breath of the rotary. Now post away!

I started this thing, so I figure it is best if I at least attempt to contribute.

1) OE Muffler, Part #EXH45920, from NAPA
2) Local NAPA, $229 with lifetime warranty
3) 1.5 Years
4) Heat = 8 This muffler didn't discolor or rust at all in a year and a half.
5) Noise = 7 It was sporty sounding with the RB header and Presilencer.

7) I have attached a picture of the muffler courtesy of NAPA's site. A side note, the muffler comes with some very nices rolled tips welded on. NAPA carries the chrome covers for them, but the plain tips look great by themselves!

GREAT IDEA!

1) Magnaflow Muffler/ Part no. 14807
2) Ebay for $140 bucks/ free shipping
3) Ive had it for about a year and a half now.
4) i say a 10. I have NOT had any trouble with it since ive had it on. ANd i don't JUST cruise my FB lol.
5) i would have to say about an 8. ITs loud enough to set off car alarms in a parking lot only going abuot 10 mph lol

The sound says it all, I think. Note that I use this muffler in conjunction with the RB header and presilencer. I think that the Borla is probably the second-nicest sounding muffler that I've used/heard. The RB is first and the Magnaflow is a distant third. Additionally, they reputably flow very nicely, so you'll make peak power.

3) 2 seasons
4) Ability To Withstand Heat 9.5 - No problems whatsoever, I'd rate it a 10 but I hate giving things a rating of 10 because nothing's "Perfect"
5) Noise: 8.5 - Quiet enough at low revs for neighborhood, sounds great (louder) when you open the secondaries and stomp on it
6) Sorry, don't have any sound clips

as rx7doctor said Walker from rockauto. I replaced the whole exhaust for my 88 accord for about 170 bucks. All mandrel bent, fantastic welds, and all flanges were machined flat. I was thoroughly impressed to say the least.

Although the RB muffler has already been listed and rated,Im gonna contribute my experience with it,since mine lives in a very hostile environment.Im one of the few willing to use this supposedly restrictive muffler,in a high HP application.

1.Racing Beat....81-82 Streetport Muffler.
2.Mazdatrix.....$300....a bargain since its still in like new condition.
3.Seven or eight years now......Daily driven,and almost 50K miles as part of a 3" exhaust system behind a streetport 13BT, taking in 14psi of boost.
4.Id rate it a high 9......After all these years,its not blwn out or changed its tone dramatically.The only sign of damage is the slight ashing of the black paint on the can.Its definately getting hot,at night the inner core tubes can be seen as a dull red glow.
5.Also a high rating,an 8......It howls pretty good under boost,but its a muted,typical turbo whoosh,not metallic or harsh at all.At cruise or idle,its typical RB quiet.With a downpipe and main cat,the muffler passes the CA noise emissions test of 94db at 18" and 4000 RPM.
6.No sound clips,but we all know what RB's sound like.
7.Pics,sure no problem........

Actually, I don't know what a RB sounds like at either idle or moving. I can't find any clips or videos of them.

Imagine stock,with a tad more bass to it.The RB completely dampens the buzzy,ringing sound that rotaries are famous for.This is due to their large volume and very heavy wall construction,which prevents resonance.
The standard RB really is that quiet,many are dissapointed when they hear it.The streetport version is a little louder and flows a bit more.The fact that I have a cat and a turbo eating up the sound before the muffler is probably why its still so quiet.

1) Magnaflow satin finish 5x8x18 PN 12254, 2in inlet and outlet, offset/center in/out.
2) Westside Performance Plus in Blenheim, Ontario. $115 per muffler
3) Not long (1 week and car isn't on the road), but the one I had on the car 2 years ago before the 12A gave up was on the car for 2 months with absolutely not change in tone or discolouring.
4) I'd say at least an 8, as said above no change in tone or discolouring on the previous one.
5) I'd say a 6-7, noise is a very vague subject as some people have different thoughts on loudness. I know some people that would say the RB system is loud, and that my system is quiet. Its just right IMO.
6) None, YET...
7) The magnaflow is a very good muffler for the price and it does an excellent job of quieting the rotary down. The best alternative to a RB power pulse IMO.

I am of course using my magnaflows on a very unique system. I've got a pacesetter header with the collector cut off, to a true dual 2" center section under the axle, to the 2 magnaflows, one on each side of the car. The sound is much different from most rotaries to say the least, but its quite low pitched and there isn't really any buzzing. There is a bit of a tinny sound, but I don't mind it actually. Adds character to the exahaust note.

Mm...quieter is always better, imo. I'll be running header, connecting pipe, muffler. Is the streetport any different or could I use it on my stockport gsl-se?

The SP version is the same as the others,just with larger piping.
It comes setup for the 81-82's stock dual mid-pipe system,as a bolt in unit.It also bolts up directly when using the RB dual primary/dual presilencer system.
But you can always cut that part off the muffler and weld it up at the 2.5" single pipe inlet at the front of the muffler.I opened the front inlet to a full 3" to match my 3" system,then installed a flange at the front to make it a bolt in unit.

The packing in the racing beat muffler will eventually fall apart, I'd give it a 9 at most. Had one from 1991 to 1999 in humid beach community (stuff flash rusts in no time) including 6 weekends of track days on the roadcourse at 8500rpms. Removed it, shook it, heard the packing sliding around inside.

Just to let everyone know. The early mufflers from Racing Beat were the Prima Flow type. They had slant cut dual tips. The later mufflers available today are the Power Pulse type with straight cut tips. The Power Pulse mufflers are made in Italy. Not sure about the Prima Flows.

He said he grenaded the diff in the second run, which in normal talk means he broke it. Broken diff means no movement.

Explain your setup .. it sounds bad and loud...

One thing to note, that just occored to me... That video was taken BEFORE the installation of the RB pre-silencer. At that point, the car only had the Borla XR1 and the DynoMax bullet. A few months later, I had the Racing Beat pre-silencer installed, and the bend over the axle clearanced. It gave it a bit lower tone (less like a weed-eater) and brought the decibels down a bit.

The setup was an S4 TII motor, with a mild street port and slightly earlier opening on the exhaust port. The manifold was an HKS FC T04 log manifold, with a T04 P-trim turbo... So no, no RB header whatsoever. I was also using a TiAL 44mm wastegate that plumbed into the exhaust about a foot or so into the system. The entire system was 3" through-out, but the bend over the axle was of smaller gauge metal than the rest of the system. Considering how loud that wastegate is, combined with the earlier port opening I'm amazed two straight-through mufflers were able to quiet it down at all.

/I'm going to use the same system on my new BP motor.
