Question Keeps dying

Recently I picked up an 84' GSL with 94k miles on it, 100% bone stock. The first owner of the car was a lady that kept it until her death then a guy that stationed on the base that I'm at bought the car at an estate auction; about a week after he bought it he got last minute orders to deploy so he sold the car to me, he didn't even get a chance to register the car. so technically I'm the second owner.

Anyways, on to my problem: the car starts fine, some a little after about a minute of being turned on. The car will die if the choke isn't on, I can take the choke down till about 2k and the car will be one, but lower than that it dies. Also the choke doesn't always stay on, something I gotta use a little stick or something to keep it pushed out.
The car needs the choke to stay on regardless of engine temperature.

I've read some where around here about the choke not staying on problem, but I'm really confused about the car not wanting to stay on with out the choke (my other GSL doesn't have a choke.)

any help?

One indication of low compression is that you have to keep the RPMs up or it will die. Do a compression check to rule out low compression.
