When I first got it I installed it at the same time than the Bonez intake kit, and did notice a difference, especially at WOT when the secondaries open.
With the current set-up, sterling carb with mech secondaries, RB air filter box and the K&N filter, all in all makes for some impressive CFM.
Hell, with the RB muffler, which is relatively silent, even though I have headers, if I floor it in neutral, opening the mech secondaries, there is more noise coming from the intake suction than from the exhaust!

I got a taller K&N filter than stock and made a lid thing. Basically the top of the filter sticks up higher than the stock box. Its hard to explain, heres a drawing. My digicam sux.

The other advantage to a K&N is you pay for the filter + cleaning kit ONCE. That $36 filter plus the $20 kit = 1,000,000 miles of clean air. Check your gas mileage too because non-paper filters tend to flow better as they get dirty where paper filters don't, there may not be any more power, but the engine wont work as hard to make it.
I hate to sound like a commercial, but K&N (and its competitors) make a product that makes sense to me.

Just as I am debating what to do for a filter, this topic comes up. Good question... Is the K&N worth it??
Here in Ontario the cheapest I have found the K&N filter for my GSL-SE (square drop-in filter) is CAD$87 (about US$60). An OEM filter from the local Mazda dealer is CAD$38 (about US$26).
So, you can see that we are not talking chump change to switch to the K&N.
Is it worth it? (my 7 is stock)

As for the GSL-SE... I haven't put one in mine yet (plan on doing it soon) but in the FC it made an immediate and noticable difference. It didn't add any power really, but the car was much smoother all throughout the powerband, and also kicked my powerband up a bit. Of course, my GSLSE makes power all the way up to redline already..heh. The FC and the GSL-SE are very similar in design, so I would expect it to help a bit in this car, especially if you build a cold air box and have a free flowing exhaust.
*edit* I should point out Im using a 3" cone filter, not the drop-in stock type.

Do you have any pics of your intake setup? I am toying with the idea of modding the intake.

Birdman, on the se you want to run the adapter at the end of the afm and run a good size
cone filter on it. The stock se box unless modified with something like the vented headlight
to feed more air is too retrictive on it's own. Spectre part # 8141 avilable thur maybe a napa
or autozone or whatever you have there is the # for the adapter, then just figure out what
size filter you want. rx7doctor

Go to the second gen section and search for "cold air" and you'll see some good threads about making cold air boxes. The GSL-SE's intake setup is identical to S4 FC's, so anything that is said there will apply. Me, I'm too lazy to build a cold air box since the FC runs fine without it. That remains to be seen with the FB.

Would the cone filter need to be supported at all (weight-wise)?

What would a good description for this "Spectre" part be? In case the person behind the counter looks at me like I have 2 heads?
Would putting the cone filter where the current stock air box less restrictive? Or should I try to route the cone in front of the radiator? If just putting the cone where the box is works well, then I might just do that.

Just tell that person what you are doing and if they have a spectre catalog they will know
exactly what it is. rx7doctor You can locate it in front of the radiator with alittle bit
of Fabrication. It will add alot to the top end, rx7doctor
