ive been debating this also. but i have a racing beat header and free flowing exhaust, with a stock air cleaner, so im thinking the air cleaner is a restriction. just havent gotten around to coughing up the money for one i guess

A nice clean paper element flows as much as a K & N, and at $40 or so for the K & N, you could buy 8-10 brand-new paper filters. So the question is: do you mind the work (and additional expense of filter oil) of cleaning and re-oiling the K & N, and how long do you need a filter to last? If you live in an area with lots of dust or smog, the K & N may be the way to go. If you have a dedicated race car, $40 worth of new paper filters will last a LONG time. Just food for thought, Merry Christmas to all! -Mike

With a K&N drop in filter (the "stock" replacement you buy), you take it out of its little plastic baggy it comes in and drop it in. Presto, youre done.
However, after you wash the K&N (cause theyre reuseable), you need to use their special washing solution (but it at the store with the filter, also comes with the oil). After you spray it down with the washing crap, you rinse it off and let it dry. Then, you have to re-oil the filter. The oil is kinda what helps attract smaller particles of dirt.
Does that help ya? If not, there are plenty of instructions to read on the filters box, as well as the "cleaning kits" box.

PS - The re-oiling is actually just an aerosol can of oil that you "paint" the filter with. Its usually dyed red so you can see where you hit or missed so you get the whole filter. Pretty easy really.

I considered going with a K&N, but changed my mind and put in a nice little cold air intake with a cone filter and it works just as good, I noticed a small difference in get up n go and sound

I would definately use the K and N. I heard stories about how they don't filter for **** but I don't believe them. I've got a KN filtercharger on my turbo'ed 13B and I wouldn't trade the intake sucking hiss and engine responsiveness for anything. Go for it. Remember..all intake systems from the factory are restrictive.

Car Craft had Westech put together a flowmeter to measure restriction imparted by the air filters only. The K&N proved it was less restrictive than a paper filter of the same size and pleat count. The Holley Blue series was even better. A clean paper filter is not the equal of a K&N....when did that urban myth get started???
