Just Stole an '83 GLS

Well I feel like I stole it anyway. I only paid $600 CAD for it. It's pretty dirty from sitting outside for a while, so it needs a good washing still.

Its an '83 Mazda Rx-7 GLS with the 12A engine. 125,000 miles (it was a US car).

Body is in perfect shape except for those two small dents on the hood (guy's friend backed into him).

What it needs:

Brake work - pedal is very soft and goes to the floor. Possibly a brake booster? I'm going to try and bleed the brakes tonight and see if that helps at all.

Leaks a lot of coolant and a little oil from the beehive cooler. I think the oil leaking would be caused by the o-rings, but I'm not too sure whats causing the coolant leak. It looks to be coming from the lower hose that come out of the oil cooler. Any ideas?

Other than that its in awesome shape. Drives real nice. Quick little bugger and corners like its on rails.

My first Rx-7

Yah, but its just surface rust, so I should be able to clean it up and put some touch up paint on it. Might bondo it and repaint the whole hood, but I'm trying to do this car on the cheap.

From the pics overall looks good. Were you kind enough to give him a reach around?

Change the engine to heater core hose. Get some copper washers from mazda (or the store) for the oil cooler line and replace those. They crush when tightened and are only good for one use.

I recommend a Rad flush as well. Also, pull out the distributor and see if the stem is dirty. Dirt indicated poor maintenance record on the car. Or merely lack of oil changes.

Thanks for the tips guys. Can you get the copper washers at a regular auto parts store (Lordco, napa, etc?) or are they a special dealer only item?

I'm going to go and bleed the brakes now to see if that firms my pedal back up.

Bleeding didn't help. There was no air in the system at all.

Going to order a Master Cylinder rebuild kit on Monday to see if that will fix my problem. Is a rebuild kit okay? or should I only go with a new one? (I searched but couldn't find much info on brake cyl rebuild kits, only clutch cyl). The reason I'm asking is that on my old Toyota 4Runner the rebuild kits do not work very well at all and end up leaking very soon.

I can't wait to get the brakes fixed so I can drive the thing like it was meant to be driven

Thanks, Good to know.

I used to work at Lordco, and I still get my old staff discount, so I usually go there for parts. But if I need anything special I'll check that place out.
