Just a Got a GSL-SE!

Yah I did!, It's my first seven and i'm excited it was very very well taken care of (needs paint-next spring) and i've done almost a full tuneup.I will post pics very soon.I have one big problem though.Gas mileage.I know it will never be great but there is so much excess gas coming out the exhaust at idle that it fogs my glasses us when i put my face down there. And it stinks like hell. How can I lean this puppy out a little bit and get a start on getting it right. It also backfires sometimes, which (correct me if i'm wrong) means there is too much unburnt gas.How can I solve this???I have a Haynes manual already so if anybody can point me to a post or give me directions on how to fix this it would be great! And yeah, pics should be up tommorrow.

Well its just a small world, I also live in Sherwood park. Do you post on 780tuners.com? Ironically my car is the spotlight car right now lol...

But to me most of your problems sound normal for a rotary, by nature they tend to backfire. Also they tend to run pretty rich compared to other vehicles, resulting in horrible gas mileage. But at the same time they are an absolute blast to drive...

Maybe at some point but i've been so crazy busy lately. Im working like 50 hour weeks and basically ordering parts the rest of the time lol.

Have you talked with any of the other RX-7 guys in town? Conroy lives about 5-10 minutes outside of sherwood park and he has helped me out several times.

First thing you need to do is check the connection at the coolant temp sensor, make sure it's clean and tight. It is located on the back of the water pump housing. Then test the sensor per haynes or the FSM and make sure it's in specs. Recommend that you do not start making any adjustments at this time. The Se injection system is finicky.

Also recommend that you do a search under the FAQ's on the se injection system. If your going to own one you might as well start brushing up on the quirks, lol.

After you do the above, feel free to pm me and i'll guide you thru other tests if the FAQ's are alittle overwhelming. Most of the threads in the FAQ's have been done very well and alot of members have spent considerable time making them user friendly.
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on you find. The 1st Se i got i spent 2 years looking at them before i found one that i bought.

btw backfiring is the way for an exhaust to lower the rpms, in a way. think of it like this, you cant just shut off the exhaust.

There should be little or no backfiring on a SE. I have owned them for years. When this is occuring there is a something out of adjustment or a malfunction in the emissions.
My current 85 Se with a racing beat header system and no cat has zero backfiring. that's because it is in perfect tune and all the equipment is in working order.
Ephiphyany, on the mileage subject. My Se with the racing beat header and presilencer, CAI. Gets 22mpg consistently. Biggest thing i recoomend is either sending the injectors out to cleaned and tested or if it's your only driver then to locate someone that has some Bg44k injector cleaner to run thru it. I believe that atkins rotary carrys it. It is well worth the money.

^^I agree ^^ with the DR...
I have 2 GSL-SE's currently and had one about 10 years ago and with the motor tuned right you will not get any backfiring. My firts SE had Racing Beat exhaust, MSD box, electric fans, cone airfilter intake and NO backfiring at all.

Okay, but what is the first best step to getting this motor in perfect tune?Would finding some of this injector cleaner be a very good idea?and that coolant temp sensor you mentioned, is it behind the water pump cover?(i couldn't find it), as in, will I have to remove the cover?I was getting about 10.5 MPG. Thanks,

Ephiphany

The coolant temp sensor is located below the t-stat housing on the back of the water pump housing. It has a major factor in A/F values. 10.5 says that you have problems.

I would start by doing what i recommended in my 1st post. Yes i do recommend highly that you get the cleaner or send them out to be cleaned. witchhunter.com only charges $15.00 per
injector and $10.00 shipping back unless you send in 4 injectors then he pays for the shipping back. Turn around time is usually 2 days max with him.

I recommend if there is no current history on maintenance to replace the plugs. Recommend NGK's. Either test the wires or get some NGK's. Inspect cap and rotor, Rotaries are famous for eating caps/rotors. Of course replace the A/filter if it is dirty.
On the temp sensor, if you trace the small coolant hose that is attached to the front of the T/body it will lead you right to the sensor.

Look for a TPS test light also. There is a good writeup in the forum somewhere. I think it cost around 6 bucks and is great for tuning the GSL-SE, mine stays in the glovebox. Have fun.

My SE backfires letting off the gas around 4000 rpm, but of course I have headers and no emissions!

Atkins rotary sells it but i don't know if it can shipped to you. It is sold only to Dealerships, and repair shops.

Yeah, I checked that sensor and it was plugged in real good, but i couldn't find anything in the hanes to test it so that was that. I got new spark plugs today, NGK BR9s and i cleaned the air filter, but haven't been able to find any of that BG44k stuff. Is there any other injecotr cleaner that maybe a double dose will do the same?Yeah I am kind of getting stumped about what it could be.

While i'm hunting for the link for the CTS test look in the haynes manual under the section of testing the ECU. There is a value listed that the temp sensor should be at when reached operating temp. As far as the cleaner goes 2 bottle of something will not strenghten it.
If you are not able to find the 44k, i've heard some people claim that the Slick 50 synthetic fuel cleaner is good. Just remember to use only 3/8 to 1/2 tank only to keep the mix stronger.
