i just won a ebay engine -85 12a for $97. which i think is a steal...its stripped...no intake no exhaust. i plan on settin it up on a engine stand and rebuilding it with a nice fat turbo then droping it in my 84 gls. anyways just wanted to let everyone in on my excitment!!! ill post again with pics when its here and pics after i get her open so see if theres any damage....it said it was takin out of a non running police impound car... but would spin freely...also if anyone has a old 5 spd thats not doing to good...give me a price...im wanna get a cheap on and have it rebuilt. well ill post again soon when its here. lata

ok im goin tomorrow to my dads shop to check out my engine. any signs i should look for? other then look into intake and exhaust fo rust? i know he had oil in it before he shipped it and was in the car not to long ago when he was tryin to start it so it hasnt been sittin around...yet hasnt been ran in a while. thanks and look foward to pics soon.

how many miles did it have? Yea I'd rebuild it and redo the rotor housings so they're smooth. look on racing beat to find out more stuff.

 

i guess id start at looking at the apex seals from the spark plug holes...count how many your loosin..try a compresstion test,theres a write-up around here.im guess for that price you have a blown rear rotor...internal id look for chipping or blemishes in the rotor housings..thats how id go about it, but id take some advice for someone more exsperienced..eather way thats a great deal on a engine u can get at least 400 for a core charge if im not misstaken but rebulding it is the way to go..HOLLA

umm had a little more then 100,000 i believe. yeah im defently rebuilding it. plus my dad is kinda gettin into it so that means im gona have some extra cash flow (which i gota pay back of course). plus he has a machine shop so everything machine wise will be free of cost.

wut rebuild kit would u suggest for a high boost engine?

and are there any that are cheaper then $800?

Just order the seals and springs and crap from mazdatrix, should be around $800 as long as you dont need new rotors and housings.

ok i spun the engine by hand and lookin into the lower spark plug holes i counted 3 seals in both rotors...but i did see some build up on the surface of the rotor. i think the guy just didnt know how to start a rotary that has been sittin..there for thought it was blown. cuz he said it would turn over just would run...which mine did that after sittin for a week..i just sprayed some cold start int he carb and started right up.

my dads makin me clean the garage and buy a engine stand before i can bring it home...but after i get it here and watch the rebuild movie a few times im gona dig in and see if i find any major damage. ]

How would you compression test a bare shortblock?

Could you just have a transmission bellhousing, starter, battery, and two spark plugs? Crank the bitch up on the floor?

EDIT: I just got to thinking...

Get ignition components and install them and hook them up... Then you be the ECU, a can of carb cleaner is your fuel system, the nozzle would be your injector, and you could probably get it running on the floor. That'd be pretty funny.
